Bystander Says Viral Story About Dianna Russini’s “Heroic” Car Crash Rescue Was Greatly Exaggerated

It’s increasingly difficult to separate fact and fiction when it comes to the Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel scandal.

Just when you think the story surrounding the former sports insider and the New England Patriots head coach can’t get any crazier, another layer is peeled back. It’s the sports story that just keeps on giving… even though both parties would probably prefer for it to all go away. The avalanche of drama started when photos, first published by Page Six, surfaced early last month showing Vrabel holding hands and lounging in a pool with the reporter on a rooftop in Sedona, Arizona.

The Patriots coach has been married to his wife, Jen Vrabel, since 1999, and the couple have two children together. Russini, meanwhile, has been married to Shake Shack vice president Kevin Goldschmidt since 2020. They also have two children together… and one of them is named Michael.

Funny enough, a couple of days after Michael was born, Diana tweeted that she was wondering about the best players and coaches in the NFL named Michael. Was she trying to leave a breadcrumb trail for everyone, or what? It sure seems like it, especially when you consider the playlist that Russini allegedly made for Vrabel on Spotify.

Initially, Vrabel and Russini denied any wrongdoing. However, as more and more has come out – like pictures of them kissing at a NYC bar in 2020 – the Patriots head coach started to speak apologetically, and even announced he’d be seeking out counseling (after the first two days of the NFL Draft). As things have unfolded more and more, all signs point towards the alleged affair being something that actually played out.

And one of the strangest parts of the story – that some may have forgotten about – was a dramatic car rescue that Russini was apparently a part of. Just a few days after Russini resigned from The Athletic, Page Six reported that she helped save an elderly man from a car crash. And the report made it seem like the disgraced sports insider was a real life superhero (and it obviously all came at a very convenient time). Maybe a little too convenient…

One source told the outlet that Russini was there at the scene of the crash in New Jersey (the accident was in her neighborhood, close to where she lives), and that someone hoisted her up on the overturned Jeep so that she could help pull out the man and his dog. It seemed like a PR stunt to many… and now, another source is basically confirming that while the crash itself wasn’t a manufactured PR stunt, the narrative surrounding her alleged heroism certainly was.

Another tipster told TMZ that Dianna Russini was, in fact, there at the scene of the crash. However, they suggest that all she did was hold the leash of the dog after the animal exited the wrecked vehicle. Other bystanders apparently assisted with rescuing the man from his overturned vehicle.

So it sure seems like there was some truth stretching in this story, and it came during a time when Russini was really in need of a win. Funny enough, most people were cynical about the former reporter for the Athletic just happening to go super hero mode a couple of days after some of the darkest points of her professional career.

According to this latest source, they were right to think that way.
