“She Hasn’t Seen The Video… ” — Kacey Musgraves Says Her Grandma Hated The “Dry Spell” Line About “Sitting On The Washing Machine”

It’s probably for the best that she never watch the music video…

Kacey Musgraves is gearing up to release her highly-anticipated album Middle Of Nowhere  this Friday, May 1st, which was produced by Musgraves produced alongside longtime collaborators Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk.

She put out two songs from the 13-song tracklist in the lead-up to the release, including the lead single “Dry Spell,” as well as the title track “Middle of Nowhere,” and Kacey will have four features from some fellow artists as well, an absolutely stacked lineup that features Willie Nelson, Billy Strings, Gregory Alan Isakov and Mrs. Miranda Lambert herself.

The lead single, “Dry Spell,” was a pretty bold choice for that honor in terms of the subject matter, as Kacey openly admits how long she’s been in a “dry spell,” and how she’s kind of starting to go crazy because of it… she wrote it with longtime collaborators Luke Laird, Shane McAnally, and Josh Osborne, and it’s a hilarious song full of innuendo that has made me giggle every time I’ve listened to it.

The girl has had a “real long 335” days, and she desperately resorted to “sitting on the washing machine”:

“It’s been a real long three-hundred and thirty-five days
And the last time, it wasn’t good anyway
I’m so lonely, lonely with a capital ‘H’
If you know what I mean, I’ve been sitting on the washing machine

Ain’t nobody’s tool up in my shed
Ain’t nobody’s boots under my bed
Ain’t nobody’s truck up in my drive
For a late night call, for a real good time
Ain’t no new notches on my belt
And I’m tired of keepin’ my hands to myself
911, it’s officially a cry for help
Y’all, I’m going through a dry spell, yep”

I mean, some may clutch their pearls, and that’s totally fine, but I have to laugh because the writing is so smart and clever, which is something I can always count on with Kacey and love about her as an artist.

But there was one person in particular that took issue with the line where Kacey talks about “sitting on the washing machine,” and it would be her grandma Barbara, who Kacey calls Nana, as Kacey told Variety, that it was not her “favorite line,” which I think is certainly understandable considering it is her grandma:

“I’ve never talked about self-pleasure before. So that’s a first for me: ‘Sitting on the washing machine.’ It’s not my grandma’s favorite line, but it’s mine, I guess.”

Of course, you’ll remember Kacey’s very popular reference to her grandma on her 2018 song “Slow Burn,” where she sings about her “grandma cried when I pierced my nose.” Thankfully, Nana hasn’t seen the video for “Dry Spell” yet, and I think that’s probably for the best… Kacey holds up an eggplant just to start it off if that gives you any indication of what it’s like, and Kacey explained that while they were actually filming the video, she got a text that her grandma had been rushed to the hospital, and she was on the phone crying, saying that if her Nana lived, she was going to “hate” the video:

“She does — although she hasn’t seen the video yet. I don’t know if she’ll laugh. Actually, in the middle of filming the video, I got a text from my dad that Nana had to be rushed to the hospital: She had a really scary extreme high blood pressure incident. So I had to leave and I was on the call, crying, like, ‘If Nana lives, she’s gonna hate this video!'”

Luckily, Nana is doing great now, and like I said, I think it’s best if she never, ever watches that video. Kacey has made other comments about how her grandma didn’t like the alternate cover of Deeper Well where she’s laying naked in a field, and it sounds like she certainly keeps Nana on her toes.

Kacey also joked that the dry spell was eventually broken, though it was a lot longer than the “335 days” in the song, and she might have to change up the lyrics on tour. And as to why Kacey wanted to sing so openly about how she hadn’t had much action in so long? Well, she felt like people love to talk about much they do have going on in that department, and she just wanted to be honest about all of the feelings that come along with that:

“I feel like most people are trying to convince you how much they’ve got going on in that department, and I just wanted to let people know how little I had going on.”

Of course, she always brings the wit and humor into such honest songs like that, and it’s what I love most about her. She’s an incredible songwriter, one of the absolute best in the business, and I feel like Middle Of Nowhere is a return to some of her campier lyrics that many fans first fell in love with, but in a really refined, evolved way with a lot of other musical elements that will make it unlike any other album she’s ever put out.

I’m counting down the hours…
