Talk about laying it all out on the line.
Is it possible for a fan in the stands to have the catch of the year in Major League Baseball? Yes, I know that the pro athletes out on the field make extraordinary plays look routine. But I’m telling you… this video of a fan catching a foul ball at the Colorado Rockies-San Diego Padres game is one of the most impressive grabs I’ve ever seen.
Anyone that has ever attended a baseball game always dreams of catching a foul ball that gets hit into the stands. In order to catch a foul ball, a lot of things have to go right. One could even argue that the stars have to align, because you have to be in just the right seat in the ball park, and a batter has to randomly hit it right towards you.
In this case, Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill had to pull one foul in the top of the eighth inning, and hit it off the railing of the second concourse to send it towards this fan who was eager to catch a baseball. How do I know that? Well, as you’ll see in this video below, he put his body on the line to bring it in.
It was quite possibly the most athletic thing to come out of the MLB last night:
There’s a fine line between bravery and stupidity… the jury is out on which word best describes that fan’s heroic catch.
The audio that goes along with the video is equally great. You can hear the announcers clutch their pearls as they try to understand what they just watched, and the entire stadium let out a collective groan when the man jumped high into the air to catch the foul ball… as if he was actually participating in the game and really needed to get the out.
And it’s important to note that the baseball fan did catch the ball. He absolutely came down with it, and it appears he gathered it with one hand (while he was holding on to his hat, and while he was falling backwards). When he shot up from behind the seats, the crowd should have met the moment with thunderous applause.
But I think even they were shocked by what had just happened, and clapping was the last thing on their mind.
Though those in attendance eventually clapped and cheered, it was muffled by the concern that everyone was feeling for the man. He seemed like he was alright, because he held the ball up in the air afterwards, and returned back to his seat (an entire row up from where he fell) and gave out some high fives to the people he was sitting with.
Here’s a longer version of the video, in case you are like me and you can’t get enough of it:
Either he wasn’t hurt at all, or he just acted like he wasn’t because he just got his bell rung. Regardless, whoever he is, he’s an absolute legend in my book… and I’d say he’s the leader in the clubhouse for catch of the year for the 2026 MLB season.
