If you liked the first episode of Marshals, one of the cast members of the Yellowstone spinoff recently hinted that it’s only going to get better.
Last weekend, the Kayce Dutton-focused spinoff that fans have been waiting for finally aired on CBS. The series, which sees Luke Grimes reprise his Yellowstone, navigates the complex life of Kayce Dutton as he faces tragedy in his personal life (the loss of his wife, Monica) and finds himself working as a U.S. Marshal.
Some fans have already taken to social media to complain that Marshals, which is airing on network television, doesn’t feel like the typical Taylor Sheridan show. Despite those reviews… the first episode of the series saw the largest same-day audience (9.52 million viewers) for a scripted series premiere.
Safe to say that Yellowstone fans were chomping at the bit to see more of Kayce Dutton.
And viewers that tuned in also got to know a character by the name Pete Calvin (played by Logan Marshall-Green), who is referred to as “Cal” in the show. He’s the U.S. Marshals team leader, and served on the Navy SEALS with Kayce back in the day.
In an interview with CNET, Marshall-Green spoke on the history that the two characters have, and how that relationship will play out on screen throughout the first season:
“There is definitely history with Cal and Kayce, and from when you leave ‘Yellowstone’ to when you pick up with ‘Marshals,’ it’s about, I think, a year, maybe two, but Kayce has gone through something massive. Cal has already been in the area creating this team; Kayce was the last person to join it.
I think he saw Kayce’s need for purpose because of what he was going through. The reason he could understand that is because of another relationship they both shared. That relationship will be doled out, not in a linear, procedural way. Actually, the show will evolve into something much less linear, with flashbacks. We’re going to go back to Afghanistan, eventually. “
That definitely sounds interesting.
And the actor behind Pete “Cal” Calvin also talked about the difference between the Yellowstone show that Kayce Dutton – among other characters in the show – first lived in and Marshals. Marshall-Green said that he assumes the actors and the showrunner (not Taylor Sheridan) are attacking the CBS series differently… and that he made it a point to go into his Marshals role a bit blind:
“I think the balance between serving ‘Yellowstone’ and that universe, and then creating this new quest for Kayce was much more in the hands of Spencer Hudnut, the creator and showrunner, and Luke (Grimes), of course.
I’m sure it’s a completely different show for Luke and Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty and Brecken Merrill, who come from years of acting in this universe and in these roles.
For me, I’ve only seen the pilot of ‘Yellowstone,’ and I quickly realized I didn’t want to watch any more. I wanted to be asking questions, not knowing the answers, in front of the camera. I was happy to stay completely ignorant of the narrative behind these men coming from the show.”
The most exciting part of the interview with Marshall-Green? He believes that the tension between Cal and Kayce will only increase as the U.S. Marshals team leader finds out more and more about the dark duties Dutton fulfilled as the enforcer of the family ranch:
“By the end of the season, those questions are going to start getting answered. There’s going to be a lot of strife when Cal realizes exactly who Kayce is, and has become, and what he’s done since leaving the SEALs. And it’s not so pretty.”
How about that for a teaser for the rest of the season?
It sounds like as the show continues into Kayce Dutton’s future, it will dive deeper and deeper into his past. For those that always wanted to see more of Kayce’s Navy SEALS days, this is a tremendous update. The next episode will air tonight on CBS, and you can watch the trailer here:
