Should have known it was some frat guys.
It was the draft slide heard around the world. Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who just had his jersey retired by the Colorado program, continued to wait and wait (and wait) for his name to be called in the 2025 NFL Draft. And it finally was… but we’ll get to that in just a bit.
The talented, dual threat quarterback out of Colorado was considered to be one of the best quarterbacks available in this year’s draft. Despite only leading the Buffaloes to a 13-11 in his two seasons at the helm, many saw his skillset and potential to be very alluring for NFL teams in need of a quarterback.
Thought apparently not all that alluring… considering a number of teams (Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers) in need of a QB either chose someone else or passed on Sanders altogether in the early rounds of the draft.
Why did Sanders fall out of the first round after many saw him as a lock to go early in the draft? Well, part of it probably had to do with the news that came out about his formal interviews ahead of the NFL Draft. According to one assistant coach, Sanders had what he calls “the worst formal interview” he’d ever seen in his life, and gave some other critical thoughts:
“He’s so entitled. He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates. … But the biggest thing is, he’s not that good.”
Another anonymous exec from an AFC team also had some scathing criticism of the QB and his attitude:
“It didn’t go great in our interview. He wants to dictate what he’s going to do and what’s best for him. He makes you feel small.”
That news came out days before the first round of the NFL Draft, which signaled to many football experts and fans that Shedeur Sanders likely wouldn’t go during the first day of the draft. So Sanders – along with his family and friends – sat in his specially made draft room and watched as dozens of other players (and a plethora of other QBs) were taken before him.
Probably the saddest moment of the wait, or the funniest depending on how you look at it, was when Sanders got prank called by someone pretending to be an NFL team executive from the New Orleans Saints. The video below shows the moment someone got Shedeur on the phone, asking Sanders how he was doing:
“Good, been waiting on you.”
And the prankster posing as the Saints team rep replied back:
“Gonna have to wait a little longer.”
Sanders was obviously confused by the call, wondering how somebody got his number.
BRUTAL.
And now, thanks to the power of the internet, we are getting to see the other side of the phone call. Everyone was wondering who might have been behind the prank call, and as it turns out, it looks like some frat guys at Ole Miss were the culprits. A video is going viral online showing a guy in an Ole Miss sweatshirt dialing up Sanders phone number, waiting for him to answer, and then reading off of a piece of paper a “script” that he and others had prepared to act as a New Orleans general manager.
You’ll notice that the phone call in the video below matches up almost perfectly with the call that is featured in the Shedeur footage above. We can’t confirm that it’s legit… but it certainly seems like everything lines up:
Officially, that’s not funny at all. Unofficially? That’s damn funny. Leave to some frat guys who probably can’t even make it to class on time to put in the work to pull off this cruel of a prank.
Though I’m sure there will be some consequences that the Ole Miss frat guys will face for the prank call. And how fitting is it that they basically told on themselves? They may have not posted the video themselves, but now it’s all over the internet, and they’re faces are right there… clear as day.
The silver lining to the whole story – if you want to call it that – is that Shedeur Sanders was FINALLY drafted by the Cleveland Browns. After being projected as a lock to be a top 10 pick late last year, Deion Sanders’ son Shedeur was drafted in the fifth round with the 144th pick.
I’m sure he’s just happy that his name was finally called, but unfortunately, the Cleveland Browns don’t have the best track record when it comes to drafting quarterbacks and having them become successful. Maybe Shedeur Sanders can change that trend though… especially with how fired up he’ll be to prove himself after the unprecedented slide.
