Playoff time in the NBA.
Folks, it’s April. You know what that means? Summer is right around the corner, and the NBA is actually starting to get interesting. I don’t mean to upset NBA fans, but most casuals only tune into the sport around this time of the year. When the playoffs start, the intensity certainly seems to pick up, which draws in the sports fans (that don’t like baseball or hockey) that are just dying for something to watch.
There are plenty of good first round playoff matchups currently playing out, like the Los Angeles Clippers facing off against Nikola Jokic (the guy who hates playing basketball but might be the best basketball player in the league) and the Denver Nuggets. Though that one has been entertaining so far, the series that I’ve had my eye on is out in L.A., where the Los Angeles Lakers are battling against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
All eyes have been on the Lakers ever since Luka Doncic was traded there from the Dallas Mavericks, and almost everyone thought that pairing up the young star with the old star that just refuses to slow down – LeBron James – in Los Angeles would make the Lakers a lock to make a championship run. In reality… they may be lucky to get past the feisty, Anthony Edwards led Timberwolves team.
The Lakers fell in Game 1 to the Timberwolves 117–95. A three point barrage by Minnesota kept them in the driver’s seat for most of the game, and they cruised to a comfortable victory, taking the first game on the road. They are set to play again tonight in Game 2, but before the tip off even got here, Minnesota’s star Anthony Edwards was hit with some bad news.
He’ll be playing basketball with $50,000 less in his pocket tonight.
Realistically, that’s not that big of a deal for a star of his caliber. The 23-year-old Edwards could probably gather that amount up using loose change from his couch. However, it’s the reason that he was fined $50,000 that makes this a noteworthy story. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the NBA decided to fine him that amount because he told a Lakers fan in the crowd during Game 1 this:
“My d**k is bigger than yours.”
Sorry, forgot to give the NSFW disclaimer there.
Pretty wild thing to say to a fan, right? I know heckling has rocketed to some extreme levels over the years, but I had no idea it had gotten to the point where professional athletes were having to break out the measuring tape (metaphorically, of course) to put unruly fans in their place.
A video of the incident that’s been circulating online first shows Anthony Edwards boasting about how many millions of dollars he has to a fan that was heckling him. Right before he checked into the game, he upped the ante and exclaimed to the fan that was bothering him:
“My d**k bigger than yours.”
Thank goodness he grabbed at his crotch region so the person in the crowd knew what he was talking about. Some body language always helps to provide context clues.
I would imagine that Anthony Edwards will refrain from saying anything of that nature to fans the rest of the way, but I honestly can’t be so sure. He might view $50,000 as chump change, and see the fine as worthwhile. If Edwards were to dare the NBA to fine him again, he wouldn’t be the first star to do so. When Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant got fined for using gun gestures, he came back the next game and started throwing figurative grenades to celebrate big plays.
Guess we’ll have to tune in tonight to see if Anthony Edwards keeps up his immature behavior during Game 2 of the Lakers-Timberwolves series. For now, most everyone on social media is getting a kick out of the fine, and many believe that Edwards won’t be fazed by it at all:
It was worth every penny lmao

He could appeal and tell the commissioners office that he has the right to prove his case.

Umm… I don’t think that will be necessary.
