Brave House Cat Fends Off Three Hungry Coyotes In Texas Driveway

House cat fights coyotes

It’s not the size of the cat in the fight… it’s the size of the fight in the cat.

Letting your pets outside is a natural process for most animal owners across the world. Though potential danger might be in the back of one’s mind, typically you let your dog or cat out, and then eventually let them back inside. It becomes a rather mundane and thoughtless activity after you do it so many times, and one that generally doesn’t involve much worrying.

That can change pretty quickly though when you find out that nearby wild animals are trying to take down your beloved, furry family member. Security camera footage in El Paso, Texas captured that exact scary encounter playing out between a lone black cat and three feisty coyotes.

And somehow the feline lived to see another day.

Coyotes, whether we like it or not, are thriving across the United States. The canines have an innate ability to survive in all different types of climates and habitats, which has unfortunately caused some to settle into more urban areas. They typically prefer more rural settings, but they’ll do just about anything to satiate their hunger. Coyotes, though small in stature, are predators and scavengers that will hunt and scavenge anything they can get their teeth around.

That’s why domesticated animals are at risk, especially in the state of Texas, where it is estimated that over 850,000 coyotes roam. The “Lonestar State” is one of many states that allows coyote hunting year-round in an effort to limit population growth, thus keeping the pets of residents safe (or at least safer). That being said, sometimes the pets still have to stand up for themselves, like the black cat in this video did.

It’s safe to say that the feline in this video had its hands (paws might be more appropriate) full. Considering a typical cat weighs around 10 pounds, and a coyote generally reaches the 30 pound mark on the scale, this was an unfair fight from the get-go, even if it was just a one-on-one matchup. Somehow, this cat squared off with THREE coyotes at the same time, and successfully managed to scare them off.

With an arched back and claws of fury, the cat made sure to keep the coyotes out in front (nobody puts baby in the corner). Not once was one of the three hungry, wild animals able to get behind the black cat, and when one approached, the kitty lunged quickly with its claws in attack mode. Eventually, the coyotes realized they had picked on the wrong cat and retreated.

In the eternal fight between cats and dogs, this is a huge win for Team Feline (and an embarrassing loss for the Team Canine):

Did this cat take a self-defense course or what?

It was a mighty impressive showing from the feline, and those that watched the video online had plenty to say in the comments below the post:

“Please keep your coyotes locked up. There’s dangerous kitties out there.”

“Cats nowadays are fearless.”

“That mini black panther gave them a pass.”

“If, ‘I’ve got got 9 lives’ was a video.”

“Three against one… this could have ended very differently. Good on that tough, brave kitty for standing strong until they backed off.”
