Looks like I’m writing in “America and a good glass of whiskey” on my ballot next week.
We’re now barreling towards Election Day, in what is being coined “the most important election of our lifetime.” Hate to be a Negative Nancy, but I feel like that moniker has been attached to every presidential election since 2008. Maybe that’s just me though.
And if you’re like me, you might suffer a bit from campaign season fatigue. This 2o24 cycle has definitely been one for the books, and regardless of who wins or loses, at least all of those pesky, repetitive political ads on TV will go away. I need to be more like Chris Stapleton when it comes to politics.
Why do I say that? Well when he was asked by The Guardian about the upcoming election, and who he would casting his vote for, the country music star gave what could be the most American answer to that question that anyone has ever given:
“I’m voting for America and a good glass of whiskey.”
Can I get an Amen?
Stapleton went on to talk more about the presidential election, and voiced how he felt about celebrities giving endorsement for one candidate or the other. The “White Horse” singer stayed very neutral, saying that he personally doesn’t feel right doing that, though he doesn’t condemn anyone else for using their platform. He adds that he doesn’t “give a sh*t” about participating in the divisive online culture war:
“I’m not saying celebrities shouldn’t endorse people – that’s American. I also think the right to keep that private, and the right to let politicians be politicians, to let people make their own choices based on what politicians say and do … that’s American, too.”
And to be honest, the more that Stapleton said about politics, the more I wished I could vote for him for president. A country music artist as POTUS? He could serenade any problem or issue right into a solution… at least that’s how I’d envision things.
But when you hear him talk about things like American values, Stapleton does give off some real presidential vibes:
“(American values are about) fairness and defending those who can’t defend themselves, or standing up for each other. About coming together, understanding points of view that aren’t yours. American values would be someone who grows up in the city getting to sit down and talk with somebody who didn’t, like myself. And then we can still find common ground.”
Nailed it.
The interview also mentioned the famous GQ Headline that suggested Chris Stapleton was the one thing that Americans could agree on. He stayed humble hearing that once again, but also admitted that he’s honored if American’s can all truly get on board with him:
“I doubt that all Americans could agree on me. But I’ll take it. If that’s true, I think it’s wonderful, because I think we need more things we can agree on.”
It’s obviously too late to get a campaign going around Chris Stapleton for 2024, but after he hit home runs with every political question he was asked, I’m ready to endorse the country music star for a 2028 presidential run.
Stapleton – Timberlake 2028?
(Editors note: We actually sold a Stapleton Timberlake ’15 shirt way back in 2015… and it sold WELL.)
