Desperate times call for desperate paddles.
Want to know a worse place to be than up a creek without a paddle? How about in the middle of the ocean – with a paddle – next to a hammerhead shark? Not saying we should change the phrase by any means, but thought I would tie that in to introduce this scary story across the pond.
A kayaker off the coast of the Canary Islands in Spain was just trying to enjoy a pleasant day paddling through the sea when a curious hammerhead shark got a little too close for comfort. In defense of the shark, it never fully attacked the small vessel – but it was definitely doing some aggressive swimming around the kayaker.
So as you’ll see in the video below, the person started utilizing their paddle as a weapon to fend off the shark. In the process, it might have just made the hammerhead more and more angry, though I don’t blame them at all for trying to keep their distance from the sharp-toothed predator.
Check it out:
That right there is why you’ll never see this guy kayaking in the ocean. If you want to get my ass out in the deep blue sea, you better have a bigger boat.
Interestingly enough, a lot of people that viewed this video online thought that the kayaker was overdoing it a bit with the paddle defense. It’s obviously easy to “armchair quarterback” this situation and say the kayaker should have handled things differently, but I’d venture to guess that a lot of us – with adrenaline pumping – would have done the exact same thing.
Some commenters didn’t agree with me on that though:
“Only aggressive one here was the kayaker.”
“New headline: Kayaker abuses curious shark for absolutely no reason!”
“The shark in the ocean makes sense. The kayak in the ocean doesn’t make sense.”
“Looks to me like the guy was hitting the shark unnecessarily.”
“Why is he making the shark angry? He should have left it alone unless it was attacking him.”
