The power of music on full display.
What would you do if some pesky black bears were getting into a dumpster that’s on your property? I can virtually guarantee that whatever you thought up as a solution is not what this North Carolina man ended up going with. Bear spray may have come to your mind. But what about heavy metal riffs?
Andy M. Phail, a North Carolina resident and musician, saw a trio of black bears breaking into his dumpster and decided to get creative. One of the best ways to keep bears away is to make loud noises, so Phail lugged his amp out on the porch and started playing some gnarly licks on his guitar.
Slowly but surely, the bears – which were digging into some garbage a little ways away – became perturbed by the loud music that was purposefully pointed in their direction. Though it’s not the most common bear deterrent, playing music loudly clearly works (mariachi music is also effective in encouraging bears to leave the area).
Once all of the bears decided they had heard enough and abandoned the dumpster, the guitarist wrapped up the song and turned to someone off camera to say this:
“It’s not my best playing, that’s the song we call ‘Scare the Bears.'”
And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that it sure looks like Mr. Phail is under house arrest. That’s either a very clunky, ankle-worn fitness tracker… or it’s an ankle monitor. No wonder he had to get creative to deter the bears. The man couldn’t leave the house…
That adds a whole other element to an already wild video.
“Dude, since these dudes broke into my jeep and ate 5 chocolate cakes they WILL not leave my complex alone. Halfstack vs da bears, (I think they call her Stumps cause she has 3 legs).”
Whatever works, eh?
It seems like the black bears would have rather preferred to hear a different genre (perhaps country?). What Phail was playing wasn’t exactly easy listening for the wild animals, and hey, that was kind of the point.
The hilarious video has gotten a lot of traction online, and there are plenty of people on social media that saw it and took some time to leave some observations and jokes in the comment section:
“The ankle monitor makes this go harder.”
“The ankle monitor is for the bears protection.”
“Don’t you dare leave that porch.”
“Don’t let his ankle monitor fool you. That’s his amp.”
“What’s your band? Not the one on your ankle.”
“My guy rockin’ the Irish Rolex.”
Can’t say I’ve heard that one before… hilarious.
