If you are going out into bear country, pack your bear spray… and bring a mariachi band if possible.
I only say that because this video shows how inexplicably effective mariachi music can be in scaring away bears. Now you might be saying, “Whiskey Riff writer, wouldn’t any form of music be enough to spook a grizzly?” Possibly, go ahead and find other examples of other genres working out in the field – I’ll wait.
Mateo Mavero Durán, who plays with a band called “The Outlaw Mariachi,” is the man in this video who put his trumpeting skills to the test. The grizzly bear had apparently gotten too close for comfort while they were camping in the Lake Tahoe, California area. So Durán decided to wield the weapon that he knew how to utilize to tell the bear to take a hike – the power of song.
Is it a good thing or a bad thing that his music playing scared away an animal? That’s the million dollar mariachi question. Personally, I’d say for the sake of trying to get the grizzly -albeit a small looking one – out of the campsite, it was a good thing that the bear went running.
But you can come to your own conclusion when you watch the hilarious clip for yourself:

The hilarious video has gotten a lot of traction online, and there are plenty of people on social media that saw it and took some time to leave some comments and jokes in the comment section:

All joking aside, don’t substitute your bear spray for a trumpet…
