My favorite from Crisco thus far.
Today, Miranda Lambert released the next song from her forthcoming album Crisco titled “Two Things Can Be True,” which is a classic heartbreaker much more in line with her country sensibilities than the other pre-released songs, and I’m sure that’s what makes me love it so much. That’s her bread and butter.
Crisco is due out everywhere here pretty soon, on October 2nd, and Miranda co-produced it with Jesse Frasure. It will feature 12 tracks as Miranda explores “heartbreak and hope, highways and honky-tonks, rhinestones and reflection, creating a record that feels both timeless and refreshingly alive.”
With this project, she will take her music in a very different direction, and as she continues to tease new music with her new label MCA, marking a new chapter in her decorated recording career, she’s venturing into a new avenue of country music.
She says that she’s always loved “every corner of country music,” and with Crisco, she wanted to lean into the more fun, upbeat kinds of songs that “make you dance”:
“I’ve always loved every corner of country music. The heartbreak songs, the honky-tonk songs, the songs that make you think and the songs that make you dance. Making this record reminded me that those things don’t have to be separated.
We followed the songs wherever they wanted to go, trusted our instincts and ended up with something that feels really fun and really honest to who I am.”
She’s already released the title track, her duet with Chris Stapleton that was released last year, “A Song To Sing,” as well as a song called “Till The Going’s Gone” and “Sunset Marquis.”
All of those songs really leaned into the disco element of her forthcoming country and disco album, but “Two Things Can Be True” feels classic and heartfelt, as Miranda admits she knows her man is thinking of another woman, but
“I’m in your arms, she’s on your mind
And lately our stars don’t align
Cold as December, your side of the bed
While you’re dreamin’ of her summer dress
Baby, you’re sayin’ the words, but you’re gone in your eyes
And we’re dancin’ around ’cause I still love the sound of your lies
I know you’re fallin’ for her, but you’re still mine
Two things can be true at the same time”
She wrote it with Jesse Frasure, Natalie Hemby, Ilya Toshinskiy and her husband, Brendan McLoughlin is also listed as a writer, which is interesting and Miranda has previously talked about how he was getting into songwriting and also helped with “Dammit Randy,” from her 2024 Postcards from Texas album.
I love the play on that phrase, and Miranda says the song is her favorite from the album too, and she hoped to bring an “old-school Patsy Cline” feeling into it:
“‘‘Two Things Can Be True’ is probably my favorite song on the record right now. There’s something about it that feels almost like singing a duet with the steel and strings, and it’s country through and through with an old-school Patsy Cline feeling. I love that it found its own little corner of the ‘Crisco’ world.”
I’d say she nailed it, and the steel guitar and production on this one is just beautiful. Her voice sounds incredible too, and I hope we get a few more like this on Crisco because nobody does these kinds of songs better than Miranda.
