Had to have been the only person who didn’t see this coming.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end (and husband of Taylor Swift) Travis Kelce has been named as a victim in a multimillion dollar Ponzi scheme who pleaded guilty to wire fraud in a Missouri court.
According to an indictment from December 2023, illegal immigrant Siddharth Jawahar and others founded an investment company called (ironically) Swiftarc Capital, LLC. He then invested nearly all of the investors’ money in a single overseas company, Philip Morris Pakistan. And as you can probably guess, that company’s stock price then took a nosedive.
Instead of telling his investors that he lost their money, he instead began taking money from other investors to repay his initial investors who were demanding their money back, while also continuing to fund his own lavish lifestyle.
The indictment alleges that he ultimately took in around $35 million and continued to spend money on private flights, expensive dinners, luxury apartments in both Austin and New York City, memberships at multiple private clubs around the country, and spending sprees at clothing stores, all while failing to invest the funds that he had collected from victims. And to make matters worse, Jawahar is also accused of hiring a political consultant while in jail in order to get favorable articles written about him in an effort to influence the judge when it came to sentencing him – instead of using that money to pay back his victims.
Well Jawahar was in court yesterday, where he plead guilty to three counts of wire fraud and sentenced to 11 years in prison while also being ordered to pay over $31 million in restitution to his victims. And during the hearing, it was revealed that one of those victims was none other than Travis Kelce.
Now, I could make a joke about how OBVIOUSLY Kelce was going to invest in a company called Swiftarc Capital. But judging by the reactions, absolutely nobody is surprised that Kelce would fall for a Ponzi scheme:
Can’t imagine anyone has ever said “that Travis kelce guy is really smart.”

Obviously nobody – Travis included – has ever claimed that he’s the smartest guy in the room. He frequently pokes fun at his own intelligence and leans into the “dumb jock” stereotypes. I mean, who can forget his infamous “squirle” tweet?
Tough break. But something tells me he’ll be able to get back on his feet financially pretty soon.
Although it seems like maybe the NFL should be providing better financial counseling to their players…and you’ve gotta wonder what Taylor Swift thought when she found out her husband lost millions of dollars to a guy who sounds like a Star Wars character.
