Tony Romo, the former Cowboy great and current NFL announcer, got pulled over for suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence… and it may or may not have had to do with his golf game.
It’s always a bummer to see high profile individuals arrested for something that’s very avoidable, and quite dangerous to those around them. I don’t have to sit here and tell you how irresponsible driving while under the influence is. Some people have their lives changed forever because of one bad decision to get behind the wheel, and as I’ve already mentioned, it’s a life-risking act that’s completely unnecessary.
Fortunately for Tony Romo, he didn’t hurt anyone while behind the wheel. The only thing he did harm is his reputation, and possibly his standing with his employer: CBS.
He was pulled over in Milwaukee and arrested after he failed sobriety tests, according to Ari Meirov:
“Former Cowboys QB and CBS announcer Tony Romo was arrested overnight in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating while under the influence. Romo was pulled over yesterday around 8 pm and taken into custody after performing poorly on standard field sobriety tests. He’s due in court on Sept. 21.”

Some saw that and said, “What the heck is Tony Romo doing up in Wisconsin anyways?” Well, thanks to some sleuths on the internet, we actually found out that the former footballer was up in West Bend, Wisconsin because he was competing in the 125th Wisconsin Amateur Championship.
On the list of pro athletes that are also very talented when it comes to the game of golf, Tony Romo is pretty high up there. He’s competed in a multitude of amateur tournaments, and often plays in celebrity competitions like the Pro-Am at the historic Pebble Beach. One of the tournaments he always plays in his the Wisconsin Amateur Championship, and this year, Romo really struggled.
He finished 35-over-par, and shot an 11-over-par 83 during the final round at the West Bend Country Club.
In his defense, no player finished under par for the tournament, so the course set up must have been very challenging. Not in his defense, it appears that he let his emotions get the best of him, and it sure looks like he had a few drinks after his round to try and ease his post-tournament pain.
Yeah, later that very night, hours after he finished his fourth and final round in West Bend, he was arrested for driving under the influence. It just goes to show that golf is hard, and it may even be what Romo blames this arrest on.
But to be clear, it’s no excuse for getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. Though we obviously don’t have all the details, it sure looks like Tony Romo had a rough weekend on the golf course, and decided to drown his sorrows with some Wisconsin brewskis. All in all, it was a pretty bad day for the former NFL star.
Shooting 35-over for the weekend, and then getting arrested? That’s what you call “in the rough,” in golfing terms.
