Quite the special flight took place this past weekend.
Retirement is one of the many milestone moments that happen in life, and Captain Jim Curtis could not have laid out his retiring flight any better. Curtis, a pilot who had been flying for over 43 years, sat in the cockpit for the final time just a few days ago. After 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, and 22 years flying commercially for Southwest (amassing over 18,000 hours of flight time), Captain Curtis had reached retirement.
Because of rules that have been adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization and the Federal Aviation Administration, commercial airline pilots are forced to retire at the age of 65. Captain Curtis celebrated his 65th birthday by taking one last flight with a very meaningful co-pilot.
The video shared by Southwest Airlines has become a beloved, viral moment. First Officer Julia Curtis – the daughter of Captain Jim Curtis – addressed a flight heading from Las Vegas to Oakland and told them that this was the Captain’s “fini flight.”
She also informed those on board that Captain Jim is her father:
“I’m really honored to be his First Officer today because Captain Curtis has been a mentor for me my entire life. He inspired me to become a pilot. On top of becoming a pilot, he also helped teach me how to walk, how to talk, how to ride a bike, how to throw a baseball, how to drive a car, and probably most importantly, he taught me how to carry myself with humility, kindness, and integrity, both in and out of work. Captain Curtis is also my dad.”
First officer Julia Curtis got choked up telling those flying with Southwest airlines that her entire life, her father was the first one to say how proud of her he was… and now she was getting to return the favor ahead of his final flight before retirement.
It was a tearjerking moment that was only alleviated by Captain Jim Curtis taking over the intercom and telling all of his passengers that he and his daughter had a bit of a disagreement to settle before they took off:
“We’ve flown together for the whole month, and we’ve had a disagreement from day one. Honestly, I cannot take off until we solve this. She’s been working at Southwest now for approximately four months. She has a full time job, and she is still on my phone plan.”
Sounds like those on board sided with First Officer Julia Curtis on that one.
In a world that can often seem to be filled with bad news, this video right here was a bright spot. Social media users have loved the heartwarming story, and in the replies, they’ve been busy wishing Captain Jim Curtis a happy retirement after 43 years up in the air:
