Cody Johnson Has The Most Relatable Reaction To Watching George Strait Perform In Viral Video

Cody Johnson

He’s just living life for the first time, too.

There is nothing I love more than seeing the famous react to things the same way we normal folks do. It’s so easy to forget that outside of their careers, they are pretty average Joes, raising families, enjoying art and TV the way we do, and living life for the first time like everyone else on the planet.

Of course, it’s fun to put our favorite famous faces on a pedestal, but at the core, they are pretty similar to us at the end of the day. Recently, Cody Johnson reminded us of this after performing at Clemson with the King of Country Music.

Leading up to their Death Valley show, Johnson had been on a career hot streak. After making the bold career goal of breaking Strait’s long-standing Rodeo Houston attendance record, Johnson would end up breaking it back in March, performing to a crowd of 80,203.

Less than two months later, Johnson would get the honor of opening up for Strait for the first time in his career this past weekend at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium in Death Valley. On a night which saw the “Check Yes Or No” singer returning to Death Valley for the first time since 1999, Strait would wind up breaking his own attendance record (and Death Valley’s as well), performing to a crowd of 90,037.

However, Johnson made it very clear during the concert that, while he’s breaking records in a similar way to George Strait, he doesn’t fancy being compared to the living legend. Addressing the jam-packed stadium, the “Dirt Cheap” singer would go on to explain that he can’t stand being called “the next George Strait,” given the fact that Strait’s #1 hits record and overall legacy can never be touched by him or anyone else at this point. He’d finish the short monologue by calling him the only King of country music.

“I have an issue with the fact that people say, ‘Oh, you’re the next George Strait.’ When I get 62 #1 singles on the Billboard charts, we can talk. There will only ever be one King of country music, and he’s here tonight.”

Since that viral moment, another moment from that night is gaining traction online, showing that although Johnson does not want to be compared to Strait, he was fangirling over being at his show. After Johnson came off the stage, he was spotted in the VIP area taking videos of The King on stage, soaking up the concert like a true country music fan would.

Johnson has spoken numerous times about how he’s a huge fan of artists like Merle Haggard and how they’ve helped write the soundtrack of his life. From this clip, it’s evident that George Strait also falls into that category. He’s fully enthralled with what’s unfolding on stage.
