Faster than Tyler Reddick at Daytona.
NASCAR fans know all about speed: Cars flying by at 200 mph at Talladega, 8 second pit stops…and you’ve never seen somebody raise a middle finger faster than a NASCAR fan at their most hated driver.
But unfortunately, one kind of speed that nobody will ever be able to escape is just how fast life flies by.
It’s those life lessons that can be learned from NASCAR that inspired the latest single, “NASCAR Fast,” for Lewis Brice.
Written by Brice along with Billy Dawson and Michael Carpenter, the song is a poignant yet rockin’ reflection on just how fast life moves, and the lessons you learn from it along the way:
“Can’t be afraid to crash
Put the pedal down when you shoot the gap
If you hit the wall you better have a couple buddies
Get you back on track
Keep them Goodyears spinnin’
Soak it up when you keep on winnin’
Before you know it there’s that checkered flag in a flash
Life goes by you NASCAR fast”
As you can imagine for someone from Brice’s hometown of Sumter, South Carolina, he grew up a NASCAR fan (back in what many NASCAR fans will tell you were the “good ole days” of the sport).
Speaking with Whiskey Riff about the new single, Lewis recalled watching the legends of the sport at his local track:
“It’s crazy because I grew up back in the in the Earnhardt era and Jeff Gordon. We definitely grew up, Sundays watching the race. I’m from Sumter, South Carolina, so we’re only 45 minutes away from Darlington Raceway so I went over there a couple times, and there was actually a club like right across the street from Darlington Raceway that we used to play.”
Drawing from his memories watching NASCAR, Lewis says he was inspired to write the song because felt like the lessons from NASCAR and country music go hand in hand:
“II started thinking about kind of how fast life goes by and I was like, ‘Man, it’s kind of kind of cool. I wonder if I could relate, you know, life lessons and how fast life goes by to NASCAR.’ Because NASCAR is all about speed. And then it’s kind of telling just different life lessons, like maybe a race car driver would tell his son or something like that growing up in the business. Life lessons about, don’t be afraid to crash, you gotta have a good set of friends, they gotta have your back when you’re down and out.”
While the song was written a couple years ago, he says it’s taken on a whole new meaning for him now that he has a little girl who just turned 2:
“It’s like NASCAR fast because she’s already grown up. She’s walking, talking, and running, and so now it kind of has even more deeper, stronger meaning to me.”
I think it’s a song anybody can relate to, whether you’re a NASCAR fan or not. Every year it seems like life just starts moving faster and faster, and one day you look back and wonder where all the years have gone.
The new single drops everywhere tomorrow, but we’re pumped to be able to bring you the first listen right here on Whiskey Riff. I know NASCAR fans are going to love it, but even if you’re not into racing, there’s no doubt it’s one that will hit home.
