Taylor Sheridan had some choice words for California Governor Gavin Newsom during a recent interview on The Joe Rogan Experience.
The creator of Yellowstone and countless other hit television shows took some time out of his incredibly busy schedule (seriously, he’s the mind behind probably a dozen series right now) to sit down with the podcast host to talk about everything from his new book, How Not To Die In Prison: A Survival Guide, to his recent hit shows like Landman and The Madison.
Sheridan is passionate about a number of different things, but when the conversation steered towards government corruption, the writer and director had a number of things he wanted to chime in on. When Rogan started talking about how much money was going to waste in California, Sheridan immediately took aim at California Governor Gavin Newsom… without name dropping him:
“That f***ing car salesman, have you had that guy on? Doesn’t he have his own podcast? Because that state is running so well, the governor doesn’t need to govern… He’ll give you the stats. Statistically, people are moving there in record numbers.”
Sarcasm there, just in case it didn’t come through clearly through written word.
Sheridan has always been adamant that he doesn’t try to push one side of the aisle over the other in his work (most still assume he leans more to the conservative side). He even asked Democratic Governor Steve Bullock for advice while he was working on Yellowstone:
“It seems to me that, for the most part, if you are the mayor of the city, and when I was writing ‘Yellowstone,’ the governor of Montana at the time who was a Democrat, I called him and asked him, ‘Hey can I just talk to you about what it’s like to be a governor? What did you think it would be? What did it turn out to be?’
What he said to me was, ‘Well I thought I was going to make all these changes and do this, and I learned that I’m the CEO of the state. And that my job as the CEO of the state is to take care of the people of the state, the employees of the state, attract business here, attract tourism here, and try to make the state make more money. That’s my job. Infrastructure and city management and people management and tourism.'”
In other words, a good mayor takes great care of their city, and a successful governor makes their state a better place.
Sheridan believes the job title is as simple as “run the state” or “run the city,” and that there shouldn’t be much more to it all. That’s why he has an issue with individuals like Governor Gavin Newsom:
“In these big, urban areas, where they are so agenda driven and they are pushing a social agenda, they’re not running the cities. They’re not running them at all. So they’re running them into the ground. And it’s tragic to see. L.A. used to be a beautiful city where you went and made your dreams come true.”
Rogan added that Newsome has been trying to get on the podcast but so far, Joe hasn’t been interested in entertaining that idea:
“He wants to be on. He talks a lot of sh*t about me. At first he was saying, “Joe Rogan is not a fan of me, but I’m a big fan of him.”
