If you’re a fan of a country artist who’s got a thick twang yet has some R&B and soul to her sound, Kassi Ashton is your kind of girl. The California, Missouri, native touched down in 2018, releasing her debut single titled after her hometown, highlighting how she was unlike anyone else in her community. As time went on, Ashton proved to the country music world that she was going to do things her way, tell stories authentically, and wasn’t afraid to write her own story.
Last year, Ashton caught the attention of more mainstream country fans thanks to her collaboration with Parker McCollum, “Sounds Like Something I’d Say,” which appeared on her last LP, Made From the Dirt: The Blooms.
In 2026, Ashton is pivoting her sound somewhat, moving into a new era of music and songwriting. She’s coming out of the gate swinging in this new era with a brand new song titled “B****es.”
“This isn’t just a new song. This is a benchmark of huge changes and the start of something that is so authentic for me creatively that I’m chomping at the bit to get it to you. It only made sense for ‘B****es’ to come first and start the next era with somewhat of a warning.”
Penned alongside Oscar Charles, Ryan Tyndell, and Bryan Simpson, Ashton showcases a softer side of her voice yet still conveys a bold message praising the long line of “B****es” she hails from.
Of course, society often uses this word as a derogatory statement toward women. A b**** is too loud, too hardheaded, too controlling, and needs to sit pretty, smile, and be a lady. However, Ashton is flipping the term upside down and using it as a term of endearment to describe the independent, resilient, and brave women who raised her.
“I come from a long line of b****es
Thick skinned tough as nails misses
So don’t act surprised when I speak my mind
I come from a long line of b****es
I’m a handful of don’t give a damn
And a pinch of too much attitude
In the blood that I bleed, every branch on the tree
Might as well be our family heirloom”
This song is the ultimate girl anthem and makes me proud to also come from a long line of “tough as nails misses.” Kassi Ashton is a name you need to know, and this new anthem has me very excited to see what she has in store for us with this new sound.
Turn it all the way up.
