Trouble At The Dutton Ranch? Showrunner Exits Three Weeks Before Premiere Of The ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff

Trouble at the Dutton Ranch already?

Turns out there’s drama both on and off screen with the newest Yellowstone spinoff. Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly are reprising their roles as Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton in the sequel series Dutton Ranch. Yellowstone fans have been patiently waiting for the show described as “Yellowstone Season 6,” and for the longest time, viewers had no idea when the Paramount+ should would be airing.

After all, Dutton Ranch was originally supposed to air in late 2025. It was eventually pushed back to an “Early 2026” release, but even that wasn’t looking promising as the months rolled on. But thanks to a recent update from the official Dutton Ranch social media, we know that Beth and Rip will be returning to our television screens on May 15 on Paramount+. The first two episodes of the series will drop on the premiere day.

That premiere update also provided a fresh synopsis for the series, which reads like this:

“Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton gamble everything on a new life in South Texas, but the promise of building a future far from the ghosts of Yellowstone quickly collides with brutal new realities and a rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire.”

Finn Little is returning to play his character Carter in the series. As for the rest of the cast, A-list actress Annette Bening will be joining the Yellowstone universe, and she’ll be playing a powerful owner of a major Texas ranch named Beulah Jackson. There will also be the addition of Jai Courtney, an Australian actor (known for his roles in The Suicide Squad and The Terminal List) that will be playing an “unpredictable ranch foreman” whose name is “Rob-Will.”

And speaking of unpredictable, I don’t think anyone expected to hear that executive producer and creator, Chad Feehan, would be leaving the show before its first episode even airs. But The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the shocking exit earlier today. Exactly three weeks before Dutton Ranch premieres, the series has lost its showrunner.

That’s not out of the norm for a Taylor Sheridan series. They’ve been known to have some turnover in the showrunner department. But the timing of this departure certainly raises some red flags. One source did tell Puck that Feehan had clashes with stars and executive producers of the show – Hauser and Reilly. There are a lot of question marks around that, but all we really know is that if Dutton Ranch gets picked up for a second season – and the chances of that happening are pretty high – Chad Feehan will not be returning as the showrunner.

It’s a real shame that this has happened right before the series is set to premiere. Up until this point, the marketing and run up to the premiere date has generated a lot of excitement. The teaser trailer alone makes Dutton Ranch look like a whole lot of fun (and makes you wonder what went wrong on set for Feehan to exit). The intensity appears to be dialed up to the max, the violence gives big-time Yellowstone vibes, and the performances from Hauser and Reilly could be award worthy. If you haven’t had a chance to watch it just yet, here’s the official teaser trailer for Dutton Ranch.
