A forbidden, pop star and hockey player romance?
To be clear, that wasn’t an attempt to reference the Heated Rivalry hockey show that’s soared to popularity over the past couple of months (the show’s star, Connor Storrie, was even the host of SNL this past weekend). I’m instead talking about the confirmed romance between Canadian singer Tate McRae and Team USA (and New Jersey Devils) hockey star Jack Hughes.
McRae was actually born in Calgary, Alberta, and she’s a fan of the Calgary Flames. So not only is she somewhat turning her back on her hometown team… her fans believe she’s betraying her home country of Canada by dating a player who helped take down Team Canada in the gold medal game of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Needless to say, Canadians and Tate McRae fans are taking this news pretty hard:
It’s been rumored that the two have been seeing each other since late 2025, and sources have reported that they are now “exclusively dating.” So that means they were together when Canada played Team USA with a gold medal on the line… I wonder who McRae was rooting for?
The overwhelming reaction that Tate McRae fans have had to this news is… how could she do this? McRae faithful are now turning on the “You Broke Me First” singer for dating the American hockey star, calling her “MAGA” because it’s believed that Jack Hughes is a supporter of President Donald Trump.

And this isn’t the first time that Tate McRae’s fans have turned on her.
Last year, when it was discovered that the pop star was collaborating on a song with Morgan Wallen for his I’m The Problem album, many quickly labeled her as “MAGA Barbie” and condemned the Canadian singer for associating herself with the country star. She’s got a knack for riling up her own insufferable fanbase… and this latest relationship with one of Canada’s rival especially stings for Canadian Tate McRae fans.
Canada just can’t get a win as of late, eh?
