The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Everyone has heard that saying at some point, right? While it may sound a bit counterintuitive, the phrase was coined by French journalist Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr back in 1849, and it implies that fundamental issues and beliefs often remain constant despite the fast-paced, never-ceasing change at the surface level.
This idea holds true in multiple ways for Nashville-based singer-songwriter Ben Chapman. At a macro level, in an ever-changing landscape of country music, Chapman’s unique fusion of country, southern rock, and funk remains an absolute force to be reckoned with, regardless of trends in the ever-evolving scene. At a more micro level, following a year of major change in Chapman’s life and career, he is truly living out this notion.
Titled “Everything’s Different,” Chapman’s brand new release comes soon after having married his longtime girlfriend and fellow singer-songwriter Meg McRee in 2025, and welcoming their first child in the same year. But as much as it sounds like Chapman is reflecting on his current stage of life, he, McRee, and co-writer Bryan Simpson actually wrote this track just before his world changed.
“In a way this song was kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy,” Chapman explained in a press release circulated by his team at Missing Piece Group. “When we wrote it, the hurricane that was approaching my life hadn’t hit just yet, but just a few short months later we were expecting a baby and getting married. Even though 2025 changed everything, sometimes I feel like the same kid trying to navigate it all. I love the way a song can grow in meaning long after the day it’s written, and this one definitely has.”
Sonically, “Everything’s Different” is an easy-going, organ-filled southern rock tune produced by Anderson East, who Chapman collaborated with for his 2024 record Downbeat.
