It should come as no surprise that Luke Combs like to throw back some cold ones and dabbles in mixed drinks.
After all, some of the country star’s biggest hits revolve around brewskis. “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” “Cold As You,” and “1, 2 Many (with Brooks & Dunn)” are some of the best drinking songs out there, and they all belong to his catalogue. You can’t just craft those kinds of tracks without some personal experience to draw off of.
That being said, it would be harsh to say that Combs hasn’t matured since he burst onto the country music scene. Heck, he even released a concept album in 2024 called Fathers & Sons that solely focused on relationships and family. So it was only right that the New York Times’ Popcast asked him about his current relationship with alcohol.
Considering he’s gotten older, grown his family, and has officially rocketed to country music superstardom, there was a good chance that things have changed for Luke Combs in the drinking department… but instead, he confirmed that as things have changed, his relationship with alcohol has very much stayed the same:
“It hasn’t.”
Shortly after that two word answer, he fired off that he loves a Jack and (Diet) Coke or a “cold ass beer.” Those are still his favorites. But he did concede that the total amount of drinking has decreased, even as his enjoyment of alcoholic beverages remains:
“I’m a guy that drinks at very specific times. Here’s when I drink. If we have a show – which again, I played 20 shows last year – so it’s not like we’re playing 100 nights a year. On average on a show night, I’m probably having two mixed drinks throughout. And that’s from my first… well three, because I’m shotgunning a beer.
Two mixed drinks and a beer every show. If I’m at deer camp, which is like a week, I’m having a mixed drink every night when I get out of the stand. It’s with seven or eight of my buddies. It’s not like I’m there by myself. It’s part of the thing. It’s part of the deal.”
So a social drinker.
Luke Combs confirmed that he mainly drinks when situations call for it in the next portion of his answer. That’s where he revealed that he doesn’t ever drink while he’s at home, and strongly believes that if he didn’t play a show for a year, or never made a trip to deer camp, the bottles (of either beer or liquor) would stay on their respective shelves:
“When I’m at home with my kids and my wife, I don’t drink at all. That’s not my thing. I could never give up the ‘when I want to have a drink (moments).’ If I didn’t play a show for the whole year, and didn’t go to deer camp, I probably wouldn’t drink at all for the entire year.”
In other words, Luke Combs could easily give up drinking. The only problem? I find it hard to believe that he’ll ever go a full year without playing a show or taking a boys trip to deer camp.
If he ever did though, and the stars aligned to keep him off stage and away from deer camp… the country music superstar could give it all up, and it doesn’t seem like he’d have much of a problem doing so. You can hear Combs talk more about his drinking habits in the interview below:
