You truly never know what to expect at a Chief concert.
It’s been nothing short of a jam-packed past week for Eric Church. In addition to premiering his first-ever concert film, Evangeline vs. The Machine Comes Alive, into theaters across the U.S. and Canada last Wednesday (and again on Feb. 14), the “Springsteen” singer capped off his monster week with three shows over the weekend in Toronto, Albany and Buffalo.
Beyond the highly successful concert film, which was nothing short of a cinematic masterpiece, one of the biggest stories of the weekend was Church calling upon none other than Ella Langley, who currently has the #1 song in the country with “Choosin’ Texas,” to perform together live for the first time ever. Langley, who has been opening with the North Carolina native, stepped up and delivered a killer cover of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” on Friday night in Buffalo.
Though Friday’s performance with Langley is undoubtedly going to be one of the most memorable moments from the weekend as a whole, the night before in Toronto gave us one of the funniest stories Church has told at a concert in quite some time.
After opening the show with the entirety of Evangeline vs. The Machine, along with the likes of “Smoke a Little Smoke,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” “Sinners Like Me” and his severely underrated cover of The Band’s “Ophelia,” Church would close out the first segment of the Toronto show with none other than “Springsteen.”
Before he’d perform his signature track, which is now certified 8x platinum, he’d recall one of the most memorable fan interactions he’s had in quite some time.
As the North Carolina native would explain, the fan was rambling on and telling him multiple stories that he simply couldn’t follow. Later in the conversation, however, the guy would randomly reveal that he got his wife pregnant at one of his concerts years ago.
“I was talking to a guy. He was telling me these stories, and the first three or four, I couldn’t follow along. But then he goes, ‘You know, the first time we got pregnant was at your show.’ So naturally, that piqued my attention. He goes, ‘It was when ‘Springsteen’ came out.'”
Unsurprisingly, Church couldn’t really help himself and let his mind wander about the absurdity of the story in general and the scene that played out at his concert. Not knowing exactly how to respond, he’d simply ask what they named the child. Learning that they named him Jim, the Chief would then dedicate the performance to him.
“I was thinking to myself, like, ‘Alright.’ I’m imagining this girl like over a railing at an arena during ‘Springsteen.’ And I couldn’t help myself, I said, ‘What did you name him?’ [He said] Jim. Jesus Christ, bro. Anyway, I don’t know why I told you that; I just thought that was bizarre… This one’s for Jim.
Not quite the way I would have approached a conversation with Eric Church of all people. I mean, you could have talked about his music, North Carolina basketball or quite literally anything else, but you can’t help but appreciate the boldness and absurdity of it all.
