Just dropping in for a visit.
Since his tragic death in a plane crash back on December 18, 2025, there have been plenty of stories shared by friends of Greg Biffle to show just what kind of guy he was. Many remember his selflessness in stepping up to help his community in the wake of Hurricane Helene, when the avid pilot hopped in his helicopter and began flying rescue missions to deliver supplies to those who were stranded by the flooding.
But for Dale Earnhardt Jr., it’s another story involving Biffle in his helicopter that stands out.
Junior took time to remember Biffle during a recent episode of his Dale Jr. Download podcast, alongside his co-host and longtime NASCAR spotter TJ Majors:
“When he retired, and I retired, and we kind of both started slowing down at the same time, I started seeing him more. Me and Amy wanted to do stuff with some of the animal hospitals and stuff that Greg was involved in, and so we would go and hang out and see Greg.
So I got to know him. We would run into each other on the lake on our boats and stuff, and cut up and laugh… So I got to know him. We all did. We all got to know him watching him do some YouTube stuff, watching him do his little dirt race out on his farm… I think we all got to see more of him, really the true individual he is…
He just loved to kind of fool with people, mess with people. And he was always kind of poking, prodding and playing. But had a really good personality… As a person, if you were sitting at the table with him, hanging out, he was so fun.”
Well Junior’s words apparently reminded Majors of a time when they were hanging out at Dale’s house, and Biffle decided to stop by for an unexpected visit – in his helicopter:
“I don’t know what we were doing, I was at your house – remember when the helicopter landed? Landed in the yard.
We were like, ‘I don’t know who that is.’ And he comes walking up. He’s like, ‘Yeah I thought you lived there, I followed this creek bed around here.’
And we just hung out for a little bit. Which was kinda cool. I don’t know of many people that would do that.”
Classic Biff.
A cause hasn’t been released yet for the plane crash that killed Biffle and six others, including his wife, Cristina Grossu; their 5-year old son Ryder; his 14-year old daughter from a previous marriage, Emma; Dennis Dutton and his son, Jack; and Craig Wadsworth. At this point it hasn’t been announced who was flying the plane, as three passengers onboard (including Biffle) were licensed pilots.
According to flight tracking data, the private Cessna Citation II took off at around 10:06 AM eastern time, but just minutes later made a turn back towards the airport after the pilot reported an unspecified problem. The plane crashed while attempting to land on the same runway they had taken off from.
The NTSB is investigating and expected to release a preliminary report soon. The final report, with their findings and recommendations, will take between 12-18 months.
