Pittsburgh Steelers WR DK Metcalf Suspended Two Games For Shoving A Detroit Lions Fan In The Stands During Yesterday’s Game

Yeah, you can’t do that.

One of the more bizarre moments of the NFL season came during yesterday’s game between the Detroit Lions and the Pittsburgh Steelers at Ford Field.

In the middle of the game with major playoff implications for both teams, Metcalf was caught on the broadcast walking up to a Lions fan in the stands and having a conversation before slapping the guy and walking back towards the bench.

I mean, where was security? Where were the coaches? It seems like there should have been somebody to stop a player from hitting a fan during a game.

After the game, the fan involved was identified as Ryan Kennedy, who told the Detroit Free Press that the altercation started when he called Metcalf by his full name, DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf:

“I called him that, and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I’m a little shocked. Like everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby.”

And apparently, it’s not the first altercation he’s had with the former Seahawks wide receiver: According to a report from the NFL Network, Metcalf reported the same fan to security last season while playing in Detroit with his former team.

Since the incident, several videos have surfaced showing the confrontation from different angles:

But afterwards, former NFL receiver Chad Johnson reported that the fan had allegedly used a racial slur towards Metcalf to set him off:

“I got word — obviously, I’m not condoning putting your hands on a fan or punching a fan — but he did call him a racial slur. He called him the N-word and he did call his mom a c–t. I think, with those words being exchanged and the fan saying that, I think that’s where the action occurred.”

Video from the stands, however, seems to dispute the allegations, as the fan can only be heard using Metcalf’s full name before being confronted:

And earlier today, Kennedy released a statement through his attorney (because obviously he has a lawyer now…he’s going to get paid) disputing that he used a racial slur or any derogatory language:

“Ryan Kennedy categorically denies using the ‘N-word,’ the ‘C-word’ or any racial, misogynistic, or hate-based language during the incident that occurred on December 21, 2025 at Ford Field during the Pittsburgh Steelers-Detroit Lions game. The allegations are categorically false.”

Kennedy says that since the incident, he has been “subjected to harassment, threats, and messages advocating violence” while saying that he wouldn’t be making any further comment “[b]ecause this matter will now likely be the subject of formal legal proceedings.”

Well we’ll still have to wait and see whether anything comes out of the incident in court, but this afternoon the NFL announced that Metcalf has been suspended for two games for “initiating a physical confrontation with a fan.”

“Metcalf’s actions violate league policy, which specifies that ‘players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day and … if a player makes unnecessary physical contact with a fan in any way that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct or presents crowd-control issues and/or risk of injury, he will be held accountable.”

As of right now the suspension would keep Metcalf out of games against the Cleveland Browns and the regular-season finale against the Baltimore Ravens, at a time when the Steelers are hoping to clinch their spot in the playoffs with a win next weekend.

Metcalf plans to appeal the penalty, but I’m not sure it’s going to do much good when a player makes contact with a fan in the stands.
