Kayce Dutton will be battling some “skeletons in his closet” in the new Yellowstone spinoff Y: Marshals.
In case you missed the big news, CBS has given a 13-episode order for a program called “Y: Marshals,” and Luke Grimes – A.K.A. Kayce Dutton – will reprise his role. Yellowstone fans know well that one of the main character qualities of Kayce, the youngest of the Dutton siblings, was his prior military experience – specifically as a Navy SEAL.
Based on the show’s proposed log line, it appears the series (which is set to air next spring) will explore his trained skillset a bit more:
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
Sounds like a hit Taylor Sheridan show to me.
Though I will say… this new sequel seems to undermine Kayce Dutton’s ending in the main Yellowstone arc. Remember when he gave up his badge, sold most of the Yellowstone Dutton ranch, and spoke about how he was grateful to finally be free from all of the violence? I guess he got over all of that real quick.
I mean, the entire show was about his inner turmoil, balancing his obligations to his wife and son and his obligation to help his father keep the ranch (usually in a violent manner). You likely remember that when Kayce finally gets that slice of inner-peace, he breaks down into tears.
That being said, Luke Grimes truly feels as though the story that the upcoming Y: Marshals has to tell finally gives his Kayce Dutton character some purpose. The actor told Entertainment Tonight that, in the character’s original arc in the flagship series, he felt as though Kayce wasn’t sure of anything that he was doing. Now, by joining the U.S. Marshals, he has a path and journey that he knows he’s supposed to be on.
But it won’t come without some baggage. In an exclusive teaser from Us Weekly, Grimes’ Kayce Dutton cane be seen joining fellow U.S. Marshals recruits and saying this:
“I am just grappling with some skeletons I would like to keep in my closet.”
So though Kayce Dutton might still have violence in his life as he moves forwards with the U.S. Marshals, it might feel more directed and more… let’s just say legal. And whatever happens in Y: Marshals may help for the youngest Dutton sibling to move past the more haunting parts of his past. In other words, maybe we’ll get to see Kayce Dutton unpack those skeletons that he says he’d like to keep hidden away.
I’ll certainly be tuning in, and can’t wait to see how Kayce Dutton moves forward with his life. While there isn’t an exact date for the premiere of Y: Marshals just yet, CBS has been confirmed that the spinoff will air sometime in spring of 2026, and will fall into the coveted Sunday 9 p.m. EST time slot.
Hard to count down the days when we don’t actually have a specific day to look forward to… but I’m sure Yellowstone fans are still excitedly anticipating the return of Kayce Dutton.
