Sorry Cracker Barrel… we weren’t familiar with your game.
For the last couple of months, the southern style eatery known as Cracker Barrel has been the punchline. But today, they turned the tables on everyone and made a joke about themselves… and boy, did it land. Who knew that self deprecating humor could revive a brand?
It was back in August when a large portion of the country lost their mind when Cracker Barrel tried to modernize their brand and change their classic logo to a lifeless, sterile logo. The restaurant chain that was born in Tennessee quickly heard from its passionate fanbase that doing so would be a huge mistake.
So after an incredible shaming movement by the people of this great country, Cracker Barrel announced that they would scrap their logo redesign that they had rolled out and revert back to the “Old Timer sitting next to Barrel” logo that has represented their brand for close to five decades. They also announced that they would suspend remodels of their stores, and even do their best to modify the stores that have already been remodeled.
The official Cracker Barrel social media account shared the news, and their decision to go back on their rebrand basically proved that peer pressure works:
“We thank our guests for sharing your voices and love for Cracker Barrel. We said we would listen, and we have. Our new logo is going away and our ‘Old Timer’ will remain.
At Cracker Barrel, it’s always been – and always will be – about serving up delicious food, warm welcomes, and the kind of country hospitality that feels like family. As a proud American institution, our 70,000 hardworking employees look forward to welcoming you to our table soon.”
So we’re all covered there right? Good deal… let’s move on.
You’ve probably also heard that President Donald Trump has been remodeling the White House to make room for a larger wing that will feature a large ballroom. The decision by the POTUS has ruffled some feathers, only because many see the demolition of the East Wing (the traditional space for first ladies and their staff to work from) as a destruction of history. However, President Trump sees it as a much needed update that will provide a 90,000-square-foot space that can accommodate over 1,000 people.
And per usual, social media has cracked plenty of jokes about the demolition of the East Wing. One popular social media account, Wall Street Mav, used artificial intelligence to mock up an image of a Cracker Barrel being attached to the White House where the East Wing used to stand:
Not the best AI job I’ve ever seen, but you get the point, right?
Well, you likely would have never seen that post if it wasn’t for Cracker Barrel swooping in and interacting with it. The restaurant’s social media account beautifully took advantage of the opportunity to make a remodel joke. As the White House is in the middle of a remodel, and Cracker Barrel are just a couple of months removed from suspending the remodel of their own locations, they replied to that above post with this comical clap back:
“You probably don’t want us anywhere near a remodel.”
Gotta love a well-timed self burn.
Believe it or not, that joke might have the power to heal the wounds that Cracker Barrel left behind when they tried to rebrand. Everyone on social media absolutely loved Cracker Barrel’s jab at themselves, and from the looks of it… people are saying they are now willing to return to the southern style chain eatery:
