Meet the world’s biggest Tennessee Volunteers fans. Sarah Ferguson is an East Tennessee woman who takes her college fandom to the next level. Ferguson’s team of choice is the University of Tennessee, and she embraces the Volunteer way of life every day, sporting her team’s colors and spirit.
“I wear orange every day, and I’ve done that for the last 13 plus years. Even my pajamas. I don’t go to bed without orange. I don’t want to be caught not supporting my Vols.”
Ferguson does more than wear orange every day; she is also an avid Vols collector, putting orange and white into every aspect of her life. Ferguson has over 100 autographs on the dashboard of her Vols-themed car, over 1,000 pieces of memorabilia, and her car horn even plays “Rocky Top.”
That car horn deserves a “Hell yeah.”
Her favorite part of being a Vols fan is the tradition she has with her best friend, attending a game each year near her birthday. Neyland Stadium has an atmosphere unmatched, and Ferguson looks forward to this one every year.
“Every year for my birthday, my bestie, Barbara Jean, gets me tickets. We go to the game. Going to Neyland Stadium, I clearly could cry every time I go. But when they go on that field and start making that T, it just does something to your inside.”
But don’t be fooled: just because she might only be physically present at one game a year, she hasn’t missed a game in the last 25 years. Even on her wedding day, she told her husband that they would not be chit-chatting with their guests because she had to cheer on the Vols.
“We played Georgia that night, and I told my husband, I said, ‘We’re just having punch and cake.’ And I said, ‘We’re not gonna stand and chit-chat with all these people at our wedding, we gotta watch that ball game.’ I wasn’t missing that.”
A woman who chooses football over her wedding day? That’s a dream girl for many men. Sarah Ferguson found her match, and her husband also supports the Vols, as a man who cheered for any other team was considered a deal breaker.
While Sarah is the ultimate Vols fan in this lifetime, she feels confident that she will be an avid Vols fan in every life. In fact, she closed out the interview by sharing some very specific details about her funeral —which, of course, includes the Vols.
“At my funeral, when my time comes, I’m having Chris Tris, Jabari Davis, Cooper Mays, them to carry me.”
The interviewer asks Ferguson to specify what they would be carrying, to which she answers without hesitation:
“My casket.”
While that is quite the funeral plan, it sounds like Ferguson would rather have another option for her remains, but does not feel confident that her alternative plan would fly.
“Now I would be cremated if they let me, let them put me in fireworks and shoot me off the first touchdown Kinsey had.”
I mean… I’m sure there are some health regulations with that, but that would be quite the way to go out. Ferguson’s southern drawl makes this crazy idea seem pretty normal, with her smooth twang detailing her dream in a comforting sense.
