Your furry household friend isn’t the only animal that “gets the zoomies.”
As it turns out, a friendly, neighborhood golden retriever and a bison have more in common than you might think. Let’s be real… you wouldn’t want a bison jumping up in your lap. But the two animals do have some similarities, and I say that because a doggo’s favorite thing to do might just be North America’s largest land mammal’s favorite thing to do as well.
What’s that favorite thing? Expending sudden bursts of energy by running around playfully, which has aptly been nicknamed as “getting the zoomies.”
The official term for the “zoomies” is actually represented by the acronym FRAPs, which stands for frenetic random activity periods. These FRAPs typically happen with dogs and cats, where they’ll all of the sudden run around at high speeds – sometimes in circles. The “zoomies” usually fizzle out within a couple of minutes.
If you are a pet owner, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
And I know I said it usually only happens with cats and dogs, but this video below out of Yellowstone National Park shows that FRAPS can affect bison as well. T. Lyn Neufeld of T. Lyn Neufeld Photography captured this footage of a young bison getting the zoomies and then proceeding to “get all up in its friend’s business” in Yellowstone National Park.
Just as younger dogs and cats are more likely to experience FRAPs, younger bison are also prone to running around in short bursts without much rhyme or reason. Annoying to bison parents, and other younger bison? One could make an argument that it is. But entertaining to watch through video? You bet it is. Neufeld was in the right place at the right time and got this playful, jumping-and-running-for-joy moment on camera for the rest of us to enjoy.

How adorable is that? The little trot/skip that it mixed in as well would probably be enough to break the “cute meter,” if such a thing existed.
And a really funny part of the video that you might have missed? Upon closer inspection, you can see that the bison with the zoomies ran up to another youngling that was… right in the middle of using the bathroom. It ran up as if to say, “Want to play?,” then quickly realized that its baby bison counterpart was a bit busy.
Social media users that came across the video got a kick out of that, and just enjoyed to see the video of the bison calf having the time of its life in Yellowstone National Park:
“Happy guy telling his friend to hurry it up. He was trying to be patient.”
“Living their best lives.”
“Little ones are so adorable and those zoomies are the best!”
“They are so cute and full of energy.”
“Kids are all the same.”
That’s a great point. Humans and animals definitely have some behavioral overlap. Kids seemingly have endless energy, and they tend to not have proper bathroom boundaries. Funny to see that rings true in the Animal Kingdom just as it does in our own lives…
