A very special surprise guest.

Riley Green headlined Windy City Smokeout in Chicago over the weekend, where he brought out a very special guest to sing Jamey Johnson’s “In Color” with him… First Lieutenant Jackson Perkins of the United States Marine Corps.

Riley covers this song at pretty much every show, and of course, it was co-written by Jamey, a United States Marine veteran himself, along with James Otto and Lee Thomas Miller and released in March of 2008 as the first single from Johnson’s 2008 That Lonesome Song album. “In Color” became his first Top 10 country hit when it peaked at #9, and he also won Song of the Year in both the 2009 ACM Awards and the 2009 CMA Awards with it.

The ballad tells the story of an old man who fought in World War II and so it makes it even more fitting and special to see Lieutenant Perkins up there with Riley, and he was a natural with his guitar onstage as the crowd cheered on and had a really cool surprise guest for this show.

“Semper Fi. Thank you First Lieutenant Jackson Perkins of the United States Marine Corps for singing this one with me.”

Riley shared video of it on TikTok, and it’s a really cool moment that you can watch here:

In addition to his extensive tour schedule this year, Riley just released his acoustic Midtown Sessions EP, which features stripped back renditions of four fan-favorite songs as well as a new one called “Bartender In Destin.”

The EP was produced by his friend and frequent collaborator Erik Dylan and includes “Change My Mind,” “Worst Way,” “Jesus Saves” and “Cowboy In Me,” though of course the easy standout for me is “Jesus Saves” and I’ve been waiting on an acoustic version of that one since he first released it.

Riley’s Damn Country Music tour runs through November and features Ella Langley as direct support, along with openers like Jamey Johnson, Lauren Watkins and more.
