Willie Nelson’s Wife Slams Inaccurate Claim That Their Son Lukas Is “Taking Care” Of Them: “Don’t Do That, Just Ask”

Setting the record straight.

Willie Nelson‘s wife, Annie D’Angelo, is clapping back after AXS TV shared an update about the “Whiskey River” singer and her relationship, as well as who oversees their care.

Last week, AXS TV shared an image of their son Lukas Nelson, who has followed in his father’s footsteps, making a name for himself in the country music space. The image of Nelson with his parents appears to be from a few years ago, given his long hair. Now, the “Pretty Much” singer sports a much shorter, clean-cut hairdo. While the image of the family is lovely, the caption that AXS shared with the image got the platform in trouble.

“Lukas Nelson takes pride in taking care of 91-yr-old dad, Willie Nelson & 63-yr-old mom, Annie D’Angelo. Lukas makes sure mom & dad are comfortable and living their best life after many long years of making rad music.”

It didn’t take long for D’Angelo to see the post and comment on the image, calling out the inaccuracies in the caption and claiming that the platform had taken the image from one of her friends.

“Hey @axstv why would you take a photo from someone else’s feed (my friend @marthacasselbodell ) & then make stuff up?”

She then points out that not only is the information about Lukas caring for Willie and her not accurate, but their ages are also incorrect (she is actually 68). She points out that Lukas and their other shared son, Micah, are very close to their parents but do not care for them on a day-to-day basis.

“I still take care of my husband (Lukas has always been there for us as has his brother Micah ) and love it. Then you claim our incorrect ages. Don’t do that, just ask.”

The implication of the post is that Nelson’s and D’Angelo’s health and well-being are at jeopardy, needing full-time care. The claim is almost comical, given that Nelson is still touring at the age of 91, currently touring with Bob Dylan and other famed musicians as a part of his Outlaw Music Festival.

Nelson is also set to host his annual 4th of July Picnic in Austin, Texas, and he shared with fans that he will be 92 (his birthday is tomorrow so Happy early Birthday, Willie!) when the event takes place and so if he can be there, you have no excuse to miss it.

“I’m 92 years old and I’ll be there so you have no excuse. I look forward to bringing back my annual 4th of July Picnic to the city I love and sharing this special event with all my Austin fans.”

Yeah… given how mobile and busy Willie is, I think he’s a ways away from needing full-time care. While D’Angelo was quick to call out AXS for this incorrect assumption about their family dynamic, many other country music fans didn’t give it a second thought. They were praising Lukas for being there for his parents.

From D’Angelo’s response, it’s clear this family unit is very tight-knit, but this instance is also a perfect example of not believing everything you see on the internet.

Before you go, check out Lukas on stage with his dad, laying down a stellar cover of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe.”
