The 2025 NFL Draft is officially underway…
We’re on Day 2 of the draft, and Day 1 saw the Jaguars trade up with the Cleveland Browns to draft two-way Heisman winner, Travis Hunter, out of Colorado. But perhaps the biggest story is who didn’t get drafted on Day 1… Hunter’s teammate and quarterback, Shedeur Sanders. The son of NFL great Deion Sanders, who also happens to be his coach at Colorado, the jury was always relatively undecided on Shedeur. He’s certainly one of the most polarizing prospect in the entire draft.
Largely projected to be the second quarterback off the board behind Cam Ward, and more than likely a first round pick, when the Las Vegas Raiders went with stud running back Ashton Jeanty, it looked liked Pittsburgh at 21 was Sanders’ next best bet. But when they passed, and New York traded up to draft Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart, it became crystal clear that Shedeur wouldn’t be drafted on Day 1.
ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper JR. was losing his mind… and the memes were great:
But the truth is… Shedeur was never a first round lock. Of course, a lot of the hype surrounding him is due to the media circus that his father brings. Deion famously tweeted that he would be a Top 5 pick, and in another tweet, said it could be an Eli Manning situation if the wrong team interested… that was quickly Community Noted by X. OOF… twist the knife. And then reports came out from an anonymous NFL assistant coach that Shedeur gave the worst interview he’s ever seen. He was called “entitled” and flat out “not good.” Of course, this always prompts some kind of racial debate, as if the NFL isn’t full of black quarterbacks, and one wasn’t drafted first overall this year.
At the end of the day, he’ll get drafted somewhere, and have the opportunity to prove himself. He’s accurate, tough, poised in the pocket… Shedeur is regarded is having some of the great qualities that you need at the NFL level, but he also has some work to do… like most rookie quarterbacks.
And while Mel Kiper was slobbering all over him all night, and others were getting enjoyment out of watching him tumble down in the draft, Shedeur’s older brother Shilo perhaps had the funniest reaction to it all. A safety at Colorado, and 25 years old, Shilo has never been regarded as a top level prospect, but he is expected to maybe be drafted in the later rounds. However, after Shedeur’s draft stock tanked, a moment of humility set in.
“I don’t even know what they’re gonna do with me, bruh, because they’re doing you like this. If they’re making HIM wait? Oh buddy… Me? Nah…”
He had his little brother laughing, in a moment where he could probably use one:
In all reality, Shedeur will likely go in Round 2, perhaps to Cleveland who has 2 early picks… maybe to the Steelers who passed late in Round 1. The Los Angeles Rams are in the mix with an aging Matt Stafford, as are the Saints who have Derek Carr looking at a potentially serious shoulder injury. Doesn’t bode well for Spencer Rattler if they do make a move for Shedeur…
And as for Shilo, he’ll have to wait until Saturday to see if he gets drafted, and if he does it will most likely be pretty late. He’s a hard hitting safety with good speed, but probably lacks the coverage ability right now to be a true impact player out of the gate. Being 25 isn’t doing him any favors either. We could even see him go undrafted and sign as an undrafted free agent, maybe make a practice squad… who knows where he’ll land.
Wherever he ends up, we at least know one thing… he’s funny. Every locker room needs a someone to lighten the mood.
Stay tuned…
