The Horrors Of Streaming Continue With MASN+ Accidentally Charging Customers $8,999 To Watch Baltimore Orioles Games

Orioles

At this point I’m far beyond some people in terms of what streaming services I have access to yet still find myself managing HBO Max, ESPN+, Netflix, Amazon, Paramount+, and Hulu. Something has to change.

Fans have been struggling to watch Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals games recently, which lead to MASN (the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network) throwing their hat in the streaming service game. They unveiled MASN+ just a few days ago which was labeled as costing either $19.99 per month or $89.99 per year, but some customers got hit with charges much higher than that because apparently every single person who’s responsible for anything these days is at least slightly incompetent.

Fans swarmed online to complain about some absolutely astounding charges they got hit with upon signing up and opting for the full year cost because someone in the finance department forgot to add a decimal. That’s right, instead of costing people $89.99, it cost they $8,999…

Other comments were posted on the O’s subreddit saying the same thing happened to them, showing it wasn’t an isolated incident, along with comments saying the advertised price was no longer available, though the entire platform had been launched less than 24 hours ago at the time:

“I should’ve scrolled down further in this thread because I JUST had this same thing happen to me. WTF

Nice – they charged my credit card $8,999.00.

Just tried to sign up, was declined then got a fraud alert from my bank asking if I approved a purchase for $8999.00, so…not off to a good start. And now I’m on the phone with the bank.

Tried it on the Android app and the annual is showing $239.99/yr when I go to sign up. Better than the $8,999 my card declined when I tried on the site, but still not right.

Just got the official email, but still annoyed at them attempting to charge me $8999.00″

Sure, plenty of people were excited that they could finally get to watch their team play, an experience I’m all too familiar with having life out of market for my Phillies for years at this point, but man, can you believe they were charging credit card $9 grand? That’s an insane issue…

Fortunately, MASN made a statement and is fixing all the charges, but still… Last year the O’s showed a ton of promise with a young roster brimming with talent, which naturally got fans all sorts of jacked up, but appear to be well on their way to squandering that once again. They currently sit with a 9-13 record and just lost a game 24-2 (yes, this is baseball), which is hard to wrap your head around.

Here’s the statement MASN made to the Baltimore Sun:

“MASN is aware of the issue that affected a handful of subscribers. Those impacted were contacted yesterday [Monday] and immediately issued refunds for the additional charge.”

Hopefully that never happens again and they get some of the buffering issues straightened out… MLBTV froze up on Opening Day, Netflix couldn’t handle the NFL games, now this? When are streamers going to figure out how to actually make a usable product?
