Floridians better be careful when answering a knock on the door.
Those that live in the southern state are probably already hesitant to just swing open their front door to anyone and everyone with all of the notorious “Florida Man” and “Florida Woman” stories that make headlines all the time. When they see this video, which was taken by a doorbell camera in the Ave Maria area (between Ft. Lauderdale and Naples), Floridians will have one other potential front door visitors to worry about.
Alligators.
Matt Devitt, a Chief Meteorologist in South Florida, has basically become the keeper of “Sunshine State” alligator videos. If a video of a gator doing something strange hits the web, Devitt is there to share it on his feed as well. Thus, he makes a great social media follow if you like alligator videos… and occasionally want to be updated on South Florida weather.
He once again shared some “meanwhile in Florida” footage, with this particular video focusing in on two gators that had wandered onto the front porch of a home. One of the gators even started climbing up the front door, while the other laid flat – presumably waiting for the more eager gator to get the door open.
Imagine hearing a knocking sound at your door, having your doorbell camera go off, and checking it to see this playing out:
“Welcome to Florida…where you might see gators casually climbing up the front door of your house. This was recently on a doorbell cam in Ave Maria.”
That doorbell camera was a lifesaver.
I don’t need to point out how terrifying that footage is, right? Those are a couple of sizable gators that look awfully comfortable close to that home. There’s no telling how many other houses they had ding-ding-ditched before landing on this Ave Maria front porch. I’m not sure I’d ever be able to comfortably step outside my home again.
And as you might imagine, the social media users that also came across this video were equally as concerned (while others cracked some jokes):
“I see a ‘For Sale’ sign in front of that condo soon.”
“I would NEVER come outside AGAIN, NEVER.”
“The way he fell over at the end lol looks like a couple of friends coming home from a late night at the bar and trying to figure out how to get in the house.”
“Nope! Not opening for the Jehovah witnesses or alligators.”
“Thank goodness the owner didn’t open the door!”
“That’s why some people call Florida Jurassic Park.”
Just a typical day in Florida, am I right?
The alligators knocking on the door because they “just happened to be in the neighborhood” reminded me of one of my favorite comedy bits, courtesy of the great Sebastian Maniscalco. It really is a good thing that people are more careful about swinging their front door open nowadays. Obviously, doorbell cameras help a lot with that too.
But if this pair of gators would have come a knockin’ back in the good ole days that Maniscalco alludes to in his bit below, they would have been in big trouble:
