This turkey didn’t stand a chance.
Out in the wild, animals (especially those considered prey) have to keep their head on a swivel. A pleasant day can quickly turn deadly if a creature doesn’t keep their guard up. Turkeys are typically good at keeping an eye out for predators, but the one in this video was putting too must trust in its natural surroundings, and ultimately paid the price.
And it was all caught on camera.
Bobcats might look like a slightly-above-average-sized house cat, but the wild animals are much more than that. Big cats typically weigh between 18 and 35 pounds and are two to three feet long. The wild felines have heightened senses of vision, smell, and hearing, and they utilize all of those skills to track down their prey. They also don’t mind using the element of surprise to catch prey in a way where they don’t even know what hit them, and love to pounce when the animal in their crosshairs is least expecting it.
And good luck finding a more determined hunter out in the wild. Once a bobcat has its next meal in sight, the animal stops at nothing to have a successful hunt. When it comes to maneuvering rocky terrain, trees and wooded areas, bobcats are some of the best climbers and jumpers in the animal kingdom. When it comes to more aquatic pursuits, they are also well known to be excellent swimmers.
This particular bobcat didn’t have to showcase its swimming skills. Instead, the big cat featured in the clip below showed off its sneaky hunting technique, followed by its incredible jumping ability (one might even go as far to say the bobcat was flying). It was a brutal bobcat ambush, and it was all captured on a trail camera (a perfectly placed one, might I add). As you’ll see, a turkey barely comes into the frame of the camera, and then quickly notices that it’s in danger.
But at that point, it was too late.
The bird’s fight-or-flight response kicked in, and the turkey chose flight. Unfortunately, the bobcat was able to choose both fight and flight, and quite literally soared through the air to capture the turkey, bringing it down in a flurry of falling feathers. It’s truly one of the more remarkable takedown videos I’ve ever seen.
It was actually the winner of the “2025 Trailcampro Video Contest,” and understandably so. I can’t imagine checking my trail camera and seeing this gem of a clip showing the brutal-yet-beautiful turkey takedown:
Man… that turkey was COOKED.
And how about the hang time showcased by that bobcat? The big cats are known to be able to jump 10 to 12 feet in the air, and the hops of the cat in this video was definitely pushing the higher part of that scale. The limited flight that turkeys have got the bird off the ground, but it just wasn’t high enough.
Crazy that the difference between life and death out in the wild can be a matter of inches.
