Willie the comedian.
With today being April Fools Day, plenty of celebrities have been pulling out all the stops to give fans a good laugh, but nothing tops what the man himself shared in Willie Nelson “audition” for Lord of the Rings spinoff during an episode of Conan years ago.
The country legend has appeared in shows like Dukes Of Hazzard, Miami Vice, and other western movies like Stagecoach as well as films of his own like Honeysuckle Rose, he definitely has some acting chops and isn’t afraid to use them. But one part in particular that he would’ve been perfect for, but didn’t get, was hte role of Gandalf for The Hobbit 2.
Willie Nelson submitted a (fake) audition tape for the wizard role, and it’s truly so good. He starts out by introducing himself, as if anyone watching it wouldn’t know:
“My name’s Willie Nelson, and I want to audition for the role of Gandalf. That wizard, in that new movie you’ve got coming up called ‘The Hobbit.’”
Next, you see him in full wizard garb, complete with a spell stick or something, passing on some wixard wisdom to viewers at home:
“You shall not pass an unlit joint, man; that’s just not cool.”
SUCH good and classic Willie advice…
His youngest son Micah is also featured, and it’s a great back-and-forth that really shows off the fun and playful side of Willie’s personality, and they ever do another spinoff or remake (which they definitely shouldn’t, but I digress…), Willie really would make the perfect wizard.
It’s not exactly a “traditional” April Fools joke, but it’s still hilarious and if you’ve never seen it before, today is your lucky day:
