I guess she didn’t care too much in the long run…

Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his wife, Amy, recently launched a new podcast called Bless Your Hardt as part of his Dirty Mo Media empire, and it’s definitely a neat look into their marriage and personal life, where they tell lots of great stories and even some secrets on each other.

During a recent episode, they did a segment where they were asked if certain things were “cringey,” and I was surprised to learn that they’re one of those couples that sits on the same side of the booth when they go out to eat… I personally do find that cringey, but even worse than that, is what Dale did on their first date.

Amy says Dale ate half of her food, and got up before she had even finished eating and said it was time to go:

“First date, we sat across from each other, [he] had hardly anything to say, but he ate half of my food and got up and was like, ‘Alright, it’s time to go, because I’m done.’ So I’d rather him sit next to me so I can hold his hand, at least have some intimacy. Mexican food restaurant, close to the house, in an old church they converted.”

It’s one thing if that happened now, because they’ve been married for almost a decade, but to do that on the first date? I’m kind of surprised he got a second one, and Dale admitted it was true:

“I don’t think your main course had even come yet, and I stood up, I was like, ‘Time to go.’ I put down some cash on the table, I’m like, ‘This should cover it, let’s go.'”

Amy said he was “absolutely serious “and they left, only to go back to his house where there was “nothing but grapes” in the fridge:

“And he was absolutely serious. Threw 100 bucks down and was like, ‘Let’s go.’ I didn’t need a whole lot that first few days of hanging out with you. There was nothing but grapes in the fridge.”

Dale did acknowledge that he was a “terrible” date

“I was terrible… I was a terrible date for a while.”

It doesn’t exactly sound like a dream or fairytale, but Amy and Dale pretty much knew from the first time they met that it was meant to be, so I guess she wasn’t too offended by the way the first date went.

During another conversation on Kenny Wallace’s Kenny Conversation podcast, Amy spoke about that first meeting when she was visiting Mooresville as part of the design team for his house, saying she almost got “choked up” the first time they made real eye contact:

“Honestly, the first meeting, and I wasn’t looking. I don’t think he was looking. He hardly looked up from the plans that at one point, I’m talking about something, I don’t remember what it was, and he turned over and then we made eye contact and I was like, ‘Uh, what was that?’ I, like, almost got a little truly choked up.

And so in the car, we drove all the way up here from Jacksonville, on the car ride home, my boss is, like ‘I think he kinda was a little smitten with you.’ And I looked at her, and I was like ‘What was that? I don’t know what that was, but he looked at me and I don’t even know what to make of that.’”

Dale and Amy have two young daughters, Isla and Nicole, and have been married for almost a decade now… so it worked out, even if the first date was less than ideal.
