She’s right, but she also defies aging, so I’ll take her advice on this one.
Dolly Parton has built a career for herself that has a staying power unlike almost anyone else – she’s just as relevant now as she was in the ’70s, when her career first started to really take off.
It’s impressive, to say the least, and her business savvy has proven to be just as impressive as her musical talent, which has made her a beloved country icon and public figure for many decades now. But in addition to those two characteristics, Dolly’s humor and grace are two of the things I admire most about her.
She’s always been so grounded and humble, which in this day and age, is really hard to come by… so it’s easy to see how this video went viral on TikTok, from an interview circa 1987, when a fan asked Dolly about her age. She nervously admitted that Dolly might not want to talk about it:
“I just wanted to ask you, but it might be too embarrassing, you might not want to answer, but how old are you?”
Dolly had no shame whatsoever, responding that she was proudly 41 years old at the time, and she looks at it much differently than most people. Dolly told the woman that you should “make the most of every year” that you’re alive, and
“Well, I’m not embarrassed at all. I’m really happy for every year that I’ve lived because I feel like I’ve accomplished a great deal in my life. I’m 41 years old, I was born January the 19th in ’46, and like I say, 10 years from now I’ll probably be sorry I told you that date.
But I don’t think so, because I think you’re only as old as you are, and you should make the most of every year you live. I think you should be proud of yourself, make every moment count, and when I get to looking too bad, I’ll just put a sack over my head and come out and sing to you!”
The aging process is something I think a lot of women struggle with, no matter how young or old you are, and I think this is a really great way of looking at it (though much easier said than done, for sure).
Now dealing with the loss of her husband of nearly 60 years Carl Dean, Dolly is facing one of the hardest things she’s ever had to deal with, and just released a beautiful song about her love for him called “If You Hadn’t Been There.”
While this interview is almost 40 years old now, Dolly’s wisdom and advice… much like her, is timeless:
