Luke Combs Harvests His First Iowa Buck: “Nothing Compares To Iowa Whitetail Hunting”

Long antlered, white tail, deer never broke Luke Combs’ heart.

Luke Combs is one of the latest country stars to post about their successful deer hunting venture. Chase Rice skipped out on the CMA Awards to go deer hunting, and later posted a picture proving that was the right call. We also recently got to see a big buck that “Don’t Mind If I Do” singer Riley Green bagged and tagged. It was the first white tail that he’s taken down on his Kansas farm.

Though those hunts and trophy bucks are nothing to sneeze at, we did get a little more information – and even a video – from Luke Combs’ hunt in Iowa. The country music star was accompanied by accomplished hunter and outdoors personality Mark Drury, and his hunt was captured on video and shared through his Drury Outdoors social media page.

The pictures and videos were also accompanied by a recollection of the hunt written by Luke Combs himself. He provided this anecdote about the hunt, which was included on Deercast and explained how the “Beautiful Crazy” singer shot the big buck just before dusk:

“It was my 2nd evening hunting Iowa and we were sitting in one the prettiest spots I have ever hunted. The evening before we had seen 31 deer. I had passed on a mature 150” 8-point that was still in the back of my mind, but I trusted Mark to put me on something even more impressive.

As the evening progressed, we had deer pouring into the cut cornfields around us out of the brushy draws. With about five minutes of legal shooting light left, I spotted two does coming out of the cedars to my right through the switchgrass. When I put my binoculars on them, I noticed movement behind them, ‘Big buck Mark, big buck!'”

The shot ended up being a buzzer beater of sorts. After Luke spotted the trio of deer – one being the big buck – Mark identified the sizable male as the target. All that was left to do was for Luke to set his sights on the deer and pull the trigger:

“Mark got the camera rolling, we opened the window to the blind, and I put the crosshairs right behind his shoulder. The shot felt good and looked lethal on the footage. We gave him about an hour and came back to recover him about 75 yards from where I shot him.

I have hunted all around the world, but nothing compares to Iowa whitetail hunting. The habitat, deer density, and genetics are the best in the country. I feel blessed to be able to hunt here and with one of the greatest whitetail minds of all time.”

“Greatest whitetail mind of all time” is such a cool title to have. Mark Drury should feel so lucky.

Once they had given the buck plenty of time to bleed out, Combs and Drury tracked it down and then posed for some pictures. The buck was an absolute beast, and definitely was worthy of sharing on social media:

Luke Combs’ first-time hunting in Iowa and we had two late season hunts you absolutely dream of. He SMOKED this beautiful buck with the Winchester 350 Legend. Proud to call you a friend and I admire your love for whitetail hunting. The camp laughs and late nights will never be replaced, brother.”

Luke Combs can do it all.

As I mentioned before, there is a video of Luke Combs taking the shot on Deercast.

Otherwise, you can catch the portion of the footage where Mark Drury and the country music star talk about the buck and whitetail hunting in Iowa in the clip below:
