Austrian Krampus March Goes Viral, & It’s Christmas Like You’ve Never Seen In Before

While this might make some people scream, it doesn’t exactly scream Christmas.

Though at the very root of things, Krampus is basically just a hardcore Santa Claus. Santa keeps a list of who is naughty and nice, right? And gives coal to those who misbehave? That’s all widely accepted folklore about the Man with the Bag. But what do you know about Krampus?

Just to catch you up to speed, Krampus -sometimes referred to as the Christmas devil – is described as a horned, half-demon, half-wolf figure (that originated in Central Europe) that punishes children for misbehaving. It’s believed that the monster known as Krampus accompanies ol’ St. Nick during visits to kids all around the world.

Think of it as a good cop, bad cop situation. Santa Claus is there to do the whole “Ho, Ho, Ho” jolly routine, and his rosy-red cheeks and friendly face are plastered all over Christmas. Santa is the good cop. Krampus – the bad cop – is there to do all of the dirty work… and scare the ever-living daylights out of kids in order to get them to act right.

I don’t know about you, but if I saw this as a kid (even at my age now to tell you the truth), I’d straighten up my act and attitude in a heartbeat:

Yeah I’ll definitely be losing some sleep tonight.

If those fiery pictures above aren’t enough for you, there’s actually a video of a Krampus Parade that recently took place in Itter, Austria currently making the rounds on social media. It’s equally terrifying, and shows the tradition that leads up to what is known as Krampus Day in Austria and Bavaria.

For two individuals that apparently work together (St. Nick and Krampus), their appearances and their motivations couldn’t be more juxtaposed. A parade full of Santas walking down that same snowy road? No problem whatsoever. That would actually be welcomed – and bring a lot of joy – in many places all across the globe.

How about when a multitude of Krampuses (or is it Krampi?) walk down a street like this? It might be accepted in parts of the world that are familiar with the tradition, but when the video hits the internet, it causes people to freak out, as you’ll see in the comments that were left below the post:
