What’s in the cup there Luke?

When it comes to awards shows, I’m not sure there’s anybody who has more fun than Luke Combs.

And no doubt a lot of that has to do with his success at the ceremonies over the years, where he’s been honored with 9 CMA Awards, including two consecutive wins for Entertainer of the Year.

No reason not to have a good time, right?

Well it seemed like Luke was having a great time last night at the 2024 CMA Awards, despite walking away empty-handed for the first time in recent memory.

Along with performing his single from the Twisters movie soundtrack “Ain’t No Love In Oklahoma,” Luke was nominated for three awards, including Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Album of the Year for his sentimental “dad album,” Fathers & Sons.

Of course the night’s top prize ended up going to Morgan Wallen, his first time winning Entertainer of the Year – but he wasn’t even there to accept it. And Album of the Year went to Leather from Cody Johnson, a moment that was highlighted by an awkward joke from Cody’s producer Trent Willmon during his acceptance speech where he appeared to throw shade at New Artist of the Year nominee Shaboozey.

As for Male Vocalist of the Year, that award went to Chris Stapleton for an incredible 8th time in his career. Stapleton holds the record for most wins in the category, with several artists including George Strait, Vince Gill and Blake Shelton tied for second with five each.

Other than 2019 and 2020, Stapleton has won the award every year since 2015 – and those two years that he didn’t win, the trophy was taken home by Luke Combs.

Just complete domination from Stapleton in that category – and honestly, it’s well-deserved. Dude can sing his ass off like nobody else in country music.

Well after Stapleton was announced as the winner last night, the camera caught a glimpse of Luke Combs as Chris was making his way to the stage – and he gave us one of the most unintentionally hilarious reactions of the night.

Luke was clearly in awe that Stapleton just kept extending his record in the category:

“His EIGHTH?”

That’s right Luke. Eight times.

And not only was it Stapleton’s eighth time winning Male Vocalist of the Year, but he also walked away with awards for Song of the Year and Single of the Year for “White Horse” – and while it’s hard to argue that he deserves all the awards, it seems like folks over on Twitter are (for some inexplicable reason) getting tired of Stapleton winning everything:

I guess it’s like when everybody hated the New England Patriots for winning all those Super Bowls. Or Jimmie Johnson for his run of 5 straight NASCAR Cup Series championships. Everybody gets sick of seeing the same winner all the time.

But when that winner is Chris Stapleton, it’s hard to be anything but impressed – which Luke Combs clearly was.
