This game is wild.
Texas came into the weekend ranked #1 in the country ahead of a big matchup with #5 Georgia. But the Longhorns appear to be on their way to the first loss of the season as they’re down 23-8 to the Bulldogs with a couple minutes left in the 3rd quarter.
Even though it’s not a particularly close game right now (as I typed that Texas scored a touchdown and brought themselves right back into the game), the energy is still high at DKR Stadium down in Austin.
All hell broke loose late in the third quarter when Texas appeared to have intercepted Georgia QB Carson Beck – but the interception was overturned by a suspect pass interference call on the Longhorns.
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian was furious, as the call took away an interception that would have given the Longhorns the ball in the red zone with a chance to bring the game within a score. And honestly, he was right to be mad. It was a bullshit call.
But it wasn’t just Sark who was upset by the call. The Texas student section began littering the field with water bottles and beer cans:

Sarkisian made his way across the field to plead with the crowd to stop, and the field was quickly cleaned up. But then the refs decided to do some cleanup of their own – and reversed the penalty that led to the chaos.
Just an absolutely insane sequence of events. Were the refs bullied into changing the call by Texas fans? If so, good officiating on the fans’ part…
But anyway, it ended up being a major turning point of the game, leading to a Texas touchdown (the one I mentioned earlier) and allowing the Longhorns to draw within a score.
We got ourselves a ballgame in Austin…and hopefully no more debris on the field.
