Keep that vote secret, ladies.
It’s not really any surprise that “Copperhead Road” singer Steve Earle is endorsing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election. The self-identified socialist supported Senator Bernie Sanders in 2016, and has called former President Donald Trump a “fascist” and “an orangutan.”
So of course Earle plans to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, and endorsement he formally made in a video posted to his social media.
But he also took time to remind people, especially women, that their vote is secret – just in case they want to vote for Harris without their friends and family knowing it:
“I think also in this election it’s really important to remember that your vote is secret. It’s called a secret ballot, and that’s a fundamental component of our democracy.
You do not have to tell your neighbors who you voted for, you do not have to tell your wife who you voted for, and probably most important in this election, you do not have to tell your husband who you voted for.”
Obviously Earle’s message is aimed at women who may be married to Trump supporters but secretly want to vote for Harris without their husbands knowing.
But at this point does anybody really keep their vote a secret? I know the whole thing used to be “never talk politics or ask somebody who they’re voting for,” but these days everybody pretty much posts their political opinions online anyway. I’m sure there are people who keep their true feelings a secret from their spouse, but if I had to guess, I’d say the vast majority of couples either agree on politics or don’t care enough to hide their real beliefs from their significant other. Could be wrong though.
Either way, Earle hasn’t been shy about his beliefs, or about encouraging people to…apparently go behind their spouse’s back to vote for Kamala Harris.
