One way to tell someone you like their raspy voice.
Keith Urban recently delivered a rather unique compliment about Miley Cyrus and her unique vocal style. If you have listened to any of Miley Cyrus’ work, whether it be her mega-hits like “Flowers” or her country covers, she has a grittiness to her vocals that makes for a unique sound combined with her insane vocal range. The girl can SING.
Fans love it, and those in the industry love it, including Keith Urban. The 56-year-old country artist noted in a recent interview with a Sydney, Australia, radio station that he’s always been drawn to her vocals. But what he compares her voice to is quite odd.
“I love that voice, man, that voice. She sounds like an ashtray. And I mean that as a compliment. She sounds like the carpet at the RSL!”
While he meant it kindly, comparing someone’s rasp to an ashtray is not an everyday phrase. But hey, it gets the point across loud and clear what he likes about her voice. This compliment did not come out of the blue. During the radio show, Urban sang a cover of her Grammy Award-winning song, “Flowers,” and praised the artist for the song’s success afterward, along with noting how much he loved her vocals sonically on the single.
After complimenting Cyrus, Urban then talked about some of the artists in Nashville trying to make their name in country music. Since Cyrus has dabbled in country music herself, eventually seeing a crossover from her would not be shocking, but he questioned the authenticity of some big artists trying to make the jump today, using Post Malone’s success as an example of the right way to do it.
“It’s a funny thing because you still need the support of the system in Nashville, and if you go about it the right way, like Post did, you’ll see the love.”
Another artist giving Post Malone their stamp of approval.
Of course, Cyrus has the country music pedigree with her father being Billy Ray Cyrus, and her godmother… the great Dolly Parton. Plus, she grew up in Nashville and has a respect and knowledge for country music… I don’t think acceptance will be an issue for Miley.
