What’s the record for quickest cold take in sports history? Former New England Patriots safety and current NBC analyst Rodney Harrison may have that dubious honor after what Xavier Worthy pulled in Thursday’s NFL season opener.
The Kansas City Chiefs first-round rookie, gift-wrapped to the reigning Super Bowl champs by the Buffalo Bills on draft night, took his first NFL touch and did this:
That record-setting 40-yard dash at the Combine made an instant transition to the field, as Worthy followed a convoy of blocks to go to the end zone untouched from 21 yards out.
I suddenly dug up this pregame take by Harrison, and my goodness, is it chilly already:

As somebody who may or may not have wagered on Worthy’s Over for receiving yards, really would’ve loved for that one to be a forward pass attempt where Patrick Mahomes just shovels it forward about a foot to boost those completion numbers. Would’ve gotten himself a touchdown pass. Come on, Andy Reid! Get your beloved quarterback another regular-season MVP! Boost those stats!
OK I’m done complaining. Well not for the season just for now. For those of you who thought I was being pedantic with my Chiefs training camp coverage when Worthy was blowing the top off the defense and catching bombs from Mahomes, the joke’s on you!! I knew this was coming. It’s physics. It’s inevitable. Kansas City’s bid for a three-peat is certainly off to a decent start. Hell, even if they lose to the revenge-minded Ravens tonight, they’ll be AFC West champs when all is said and done. Why pretend like it’s gonna be anything different?
Even Tyreek Hill is having some FOMO watching Worthy blaze his way across the gridiron for his former team — and Matthew McConaughey of course took notice of the former Texas Longhorn’s immediate impact.
