Actor and comedian Rob Schneider apparently heard what his daughter, Elle King, had to say about him recently.
The “Ex’s and Oh’s” singer spoke on the strained relationship with her father during a recent appearance on the Dumb Blonde podcast with Bunnie XO. Though she got into a lot of detail, one of the main points was that Rob Schneider wasn’t there for her as a dad in the early parts of her life.
And that led to them not talking all that often as she grew up:
“I go for like 4 or 5 years without talking to my dad. I put out my record and people finally started asking about my dad, and my dad called me and was like, ‘Don’t f***ing talk about me in the press.’ So it’s like, ‘Get f***ed.’”
If I would ever spend a summer with my dad, it would be on a movie set. I would just get lost in the shuffle. If I ever messed up a shot, if I ever was talking, like, I would get in f***ing TROUBLE.”
Doesn’t sound like much of a childhood right there… although, I imagine there are many children whose parents are/were Hollywood actors, professional athletes, or other kinds of celebrities, that experienced a similar upbringing.
And today, it looks like Rob Schneider is trying to make things right – or as right as they can be – by apologizing to King for not being there for her. Though it was a strange way to do it (the formal apology happened right in the middle of an interview that Rob did with Tucker Carlson), Schneider laid it all out there and took responsibility for not being there for his daughter:
“Well, I just want to tell my daughter… Elle, I love you. And I wish I was the father in my 20s that you needed. Clearly I wasn’t. And I hope you can forgive me for my shortcomings. I love you completely. I love you entirely.
I just want you to be well and happy with you and your beautiful baby, Lucky. I wish you the best. I feel terrible and I just want you to know that I don’t take anything you say personally.”
Carlson then asked how, as a parent, you could have your kid publicly talk bad about you and turn around and offer up an apology. The longtime comedian got as serious as you’ll ever see him and chokingly responded with:
“If you love somebody completely… I love her. And all I want for her is to be happy and heal from this.”
Respect.
