She doesn’t miss.

Today, Megan Moroney released a new song, or poem is probably a better way to describe it, called “Hell of a Show,” from her forthcoming sophomore album Am I Okay? which is out everywhere this Friday.

The Georgia native says it actually started out as a poem, and coming in at only one minute and thirty-five seconds, I feel like we could probably still call it that. Meg explained that “Hell of a Show” was inspired during a time in her life when her career was taking off and she was selling out venues all over the country, and her fans were giving her incredible support and loving everything about her music.

On the flip side, she had a guy who was ruining her personal life and she learned quickly how to put on a smile for the show and get through it, even when it’s the last thing she felt like doing:

“That song started as a poem, which I’d never done before. I wrote it by myself on the back of the bus, thinking about how all these unbelievable things were happening and I couldn’t even be happy because some guy was ruining it for me.

Even if my fans haven’t had the experience of being a performer, I think they’ll relate to faking a smile to try to make it through when someone else is getting in the way of what should be a happy moment.”

The sentiment of faking it and slapping on a smile is something I think pretty much any person can relate to, and the simple production features just Meg and her acoustic guitar which adds to the meaning and deeper nature of this confessional song.

She poignantly remarks on how her performing career is “everything “I’ve wanted,” and knows she should be happy, but “he’s so damn mean to me” and she needs to be “on stage in 20” so:

“I guess you could say I put on a hell of a show
’Cause I’ll smile and I’ll sing and I’ll wave and repeat
And tonight I’ll cry myself to sleep.”

I love the double meaning and honesty in these short and impactful lyrics, and it’s exactly the kind of deeper, more introspective song I was hoping she’d deliver on this next record, because I think Megan is such a strong writer with a lot to say.

Truthfully, it feels like we still have a lot more to learn about her in terms of her depth past all the blonde hair and makeup (which, obviously, I love too), and she has really delivered so far.

I just can’t wait to hear the entire album, and luckily we don’t have to wait too much longer… definitely go ahead and check it out while you’re here:
