Parker McCollum knew that he was going to be a part of history.
Since Saturday night, the world has been buzzing about George Strait setting the record for the largest ticketed concert in United States history, and rightfully so. It’s a massive milestone for country music and once again showed the world why Strait is the King of Country Music.
As someone fortunate enough to attend, I have to say the energy in Kyle Field was unlike any other concert I have ever attended, making it a monumental night for audience members and those performing. With Kyle Field’s reported capacity being 102,733, the stadium was more than 8,000 people over capacity as everyone packed in to see the Straits One Texas show for the year.
While the stadium alone would not have broken the record, Parker McCollum sat down with Y100 San Antonio for a radio interview when the show was announced. He was confident that Strait would break the record, and he, too, would be a part of history.
“I think it will be the largest non-race crowd in United States history. Special.”
The radio talk show host then asked Parker how George asked him to join him on this historic bill.
“You know I’d played golf with George probably September, October last year, I don’t remember exactly, and him and his partner against me and my partner in a little tournament, a charity thing he has. Kind of chalked it up a little bit, he was real sweet to me, real good to me, and you know it wasn’t too much longer after that.
I don’t know if that had anything to do with it I just kind of assumed that it did. But it wasn’t too long after that, management called and was like, ‘Hey would you want to play Kyle Field with George Strait on June 15th?’ I’m like, ‘Dude, that’s my birthday. I would love to.'”
While Parker was beyond stoked to be asked to join the legend for this special show, he was still humble, noting that he was just a tiny part of why they would ‘probably’ make history.
“It ain’t about me, man; it’s about The King making history and playing Kyle Field. We are just honored to get to be a small part of it. That’s as Texan as you can get right there. Kyle Field with George Strait setting a national record.
Like I said, you know, just to be a small part of it, and that’s a crazy blessing, and I’m sure it will go by in the blink of an eye. But just got to soak it all in.”
What an incredible moment McCollum was able to be a part of. While he thinks he might have only been an opening act, I can attest that the stadium was packed for his set, with many people making sure they made it in for his performance.
What a way to celebrate your birthday.
