Randy Houser better be pulling our leg when he says this is his first time seeing this video…
Nearly a decade ago (which is crazy to say it’s been that long), Luke Combs was still performing in dive bars, and before the release of his debut album, he was laying down covers of country gold. One night in Ashville, North Carolina, Combs took to a small stage with a beer in hand to cover Randy Houser’s hit “How Country Feels.”
The 2013 hit from Houser is genuinely a timeless track and still hits just as hard 11 years after its release date (Sidenote: Randy Houser’s 2019 Magnolia record is one of the most slept on records of the past decade). To say Combs blew it out of the park that night is an understatement, and the video quickly went viral. Comb’s cover of the song is well-loved by country fans and resurfaces for another viral moment every few years.
Yesterday, Houser took to TikTok and reacted to the cover of his song. While I thought Houser was reacting to the video to shine some continued light on his hit, he noted in the caption that it was his first time ever seeing the footage.
“First time seeing this, love it.”
As Houser listens to Combs belt a thick twang as he sings the lyrics, he adds his commentary on how blown away he is by the cover.
“That’s my dog. Yeah! Who is that? Who is this guy? Dude, we got to sign this guy…immediately. He sounds better than I do.”
Houser continues joking that he will sign “Grey Eagle” (the sign displayed behind Combs), obviously knowing that it’s Luke Combs performing. Houser loves a joke and clearly knows who is performing, given Luke Combs’ signature fishing shirt and beer in hand.
But I truly wonder if he is playing around by saying it was his first time seeing that clip or if he was being genuine. Regardless, it’s always fun to see artists react to videos of folks singing their songs, and this one is an added bonus that it’s Luke Combs from so early in his career.

While you’re here, watch Combs’ entire cover. It’s stellar.
